Since 1843, Maine Audubon has worked to conserve Maine wildlife and wildlife habitat by
engaging people in education, conservation, and action. Maine Audubon has eight public
centers and sanctuaries across the state, seven chapters, and more than 30,000 members,
supporters, and volunteers, making it the oldest and largest Maine-based conservation
organization.
Maine Audubon is actively seeking a Human Resources Manager to oversee and enhance its Human
Resources operations. The ideal candidate will possess strong HR Generalist skills and demonstrate
the ability to serve as a cultural ambassador for the organization. This role will collaborate closely
with our Director of Finance and Administration to successfully achieve organizational objectives
regarding talent recruitment and effective employee relations management throughout the entire
employment lifecycle.
Overview
We are seeking a dedicated and skilled Human Resources Manager to join our dynamic team. This
role is essential in supporting various HR functions and ensuring that our HR practices align with
Maine Audubon’s goals. The ideal candidate will have a strong foundation in HR processes,
excellent communication skills, and the ability to manage multiple priorities effectively.
The chosen candidate will be an experienced, savvy Human Resources professional with excellent
people, public relations, and written, verbal and computer skills, as well as the ability to maintain
confidentiality and demonstrate professionalism. This position is highly visible and involves
interaction with a diverse range of stakeholders across all levels of the organization. It necessitates a
significant degree of initiative, sound independent judgment, and excellent organizational skills.
In conjunction with the Director of Finance and Administration, this position oversees all aspects of
the human resources function, from payroll to benefits, recruitment, training, culture, and
performance management.
Duties
- Manage talent acquisition efforts, including creating job descriptions and job postings.
- Posting job advertisements, assisting with organizing resumes, and sorting candidates.
- Assistance with scheduling phone screenings and interviews.
- Participate in the interview process to ensure alignment with company values and policies
throughout the hiring process. - Managing and tracking of background checks and reference checks.
- Coordinate employee onboarding and orientation activities.
- Drafting and filing HR documentation (offer letters, new hire checklists, annual raise forms,
exit interviews, termination checklists) - Conduct employee orientation sessions to ensure new hires are well-integrated Maine
Audubon culture. - Implement and utilize talent acquisition software to improve candidate experience and
enhance efficiency - Manage the performance management process, ensuring timely evaluations and feedback for
employees. - Assist with the development of short and long term plans for all areas of human resources.
Gather and interpret data for human resources policies and procedures. - Handle any queries and administration tasks related to employee benefits and perks,
including health insurance, other health plans, retirement plans, and vacation time. - Maintain accurate employee records, including staff files, HRIS data, and other HR
documentation - Utilize ADP Workforce Now to manage employee records, pay and benefits.
- Ensure the Maine Audubon employee handbook includes annual updates/communications
of benefit programs offered. - Participate in the design, review, and administration of Maine Audubon’s performance
appraisal program in conjunction with managers and supervisors. - Support EDI action planning efforts to promote diversity and inclusion within the
workplace. - Participate in EDI working group meetings
- Coordinate employee cultural events including All Staff and Employee Retreats
- Regular review and update of Human Resources initiatives (policies, personnel, labor
management, work culture, benefits administration, EDI initiatives) - Oversee project management for HR initiatives, ensuring projects are completed on time
and within scope.
Experience
The ideal candidate will possess:
- Proven experience in talent acquisition processes.
- Proficiency in ADP Workforce now or similar HRIS systems is preferred.
- Experience in project management within an HR context is a plus.
- Bachelor’s degree in Business, Human Resources or related field, or appropriate relevant
experience. - 3+ years of experience with human resources administration, including hiring, payroll
processing and benefits administration. - Respect for the extreme confidential nature of the work
- Team oriented attitude and ability to work well with all staff, vendors and others.

Timing, Compensation, and Benefits
- This is a full-time, year-round position, 40 hours per week.
- This position is based primarily in the office, with occasional remote work possible.
- Occasional travel to Maine Audubon work sites in Holden, Scarborough, and Elliotsville
