A private farm estate in Upperville, VA is looking for a full-time, Invasive Management Specialist. The primary responsibilities will include assisting farm staff in a sitewide conservation programs that focuses on the removal of invasive species as well as implementing sitewide projects that promote healthy flora and fauna. This position will report to the current Land Steward and farm General Manager.

Job Responsibilities

  • Assist Land Steward in managing invasive plant contractors as well as perform removal of invasives including mechanical removal with skid steer, herbicide application, and/or using hand tools/chainsaw.
  • Support ecological health and resiliency through habitat restoration. Coordinate and conduct removal of invasive species. Promote successful native plant regeneration through plant protection, forestry, replanting strategies.
  • Manage GIS database. Create new maps and collect GPS data as necessary
  • Procure and maintain materials, supplies, and equipment to carry out stewardship activities.
  • Assist farm staff in researching cost share incentives to present to the owner
  • Work alongside landscape architects in a collaborative effort and provide advise on means/methodology.
  • Assist in trail maintenance of several miles of trails. This includes removing downed trees, cleaning up trail edges, seeding, etc.
  • Help with installation and maintenance of wildlife habitat including blue bird houses, duck boxes, wildlife meadows, upland bird habitat, etc.
  • Assist in maintaining farm equipment including skid steer, John Deere tractors, farm UTV’s, and tools.
  • Be proactive and a team player with other members of the farm team including the estate manager, gardener, general manager, cattle team.
  • Assist team with mowing/bush hogging needs

Preferred Skillset

  • Computer skills including Microsoft suite
  • Experience using ArcGIS software
  • Preferred background or knowledge in botany/biology/forestry management
  • Knowledge of herbicides and application methodology
  • Ability to exercise responsible safety protocol
  • Be comfortable working in inclement weather conditions
  • Able to communicate and work well with the team members
  • Self-motivated and eager to learn alongside farm team
  • Problem solving skills
  • Can lift up to 50lbs
