Job Description:

Shultz Forest Management and Consulting LLC is seeking applicants to fill a full time (40hrs/week), seasonal Invasive Plant Crew Member internship positions. The primary focus of these positions is to conduct wetland restoration on private lands in accordance with NJ DEP regulations and perform forest restoration through invasive plant control and tree maintenance.  Primary duties will include mechanical and chemical treatment of both herbaceous and woody invasive plants as well as tree sapling/seedling maintenance on numerous properties throughout New Jersey. The position may include a small amount of overnight travel for which hotels will be provided. There may be occasional travel to eastern Pennsylvania to work on additional sites.

Crew members will treat invasive plants using herbicides with backpack sprayers and spray bottles. Mechanical treatment includes using loppers, handsaws, and some chainsaw use. Tree sapling maintenance includes removing tree tubes and re-staking trees, as well as some deer fence maintenance. Crew members will learn how to use various equipment, how to apply herbicides safely and correctly, how to identify and treat several invasive plants, and how to identify common tree species native to the Eastern United States. Crew members will also be provided with additional educational opportunities.

There will be two crews working throughout New Jersey. One team will cover sites in Northern New Jersey and another crew will be covering sites in Southern New Jersey. The Northern New Jersey team will consist of four people that includes a Wetland Restoration Specialist, an Ecological Restoration Technician, and two Crew Members. The Southern New Jersey team will consist of two people, a Lead Ecological Restoration Technician and one Crew Member. The two crews will occasionally work together on larger projects.

Job Requirements:

This is a labor-intensive field position, and the employee should expect to spend >95% of their time working outdoors, must be able to carry a 30-pound pack over various terrain, lift 50 pounds, and work in all weather conditions. Some work will be conducted in wet areas and proper footwear will be required. Encounters with poison ivy, stinging and biting insects, ticks, venomous snakes, and other hazardous conditions common to the forests and wetlands of the area occur regularly. Applicant must have some experience in identifying eastern U.S. tree species and invasive plant species common to the area. An Associate’s Degree or two years of college courses as part of a Bachelors degree in Forestry, Environmental Science, Conservation Biology, Natural Resource Management or other related program is required for this position. Previous work experience is preferred but not required depending on course work and level of degree. The successful applicant must demonstrate an ability to work independently and in a team environment. Applicant must present themselves in a professional business-like manner when interacting with contractors, clients, and the public. Applicant must be a legal U.S. resident.
