GREENWOOD ECOLOGICAL RESERVE LAND MANAGER

The Greenwood Ecological Reserve (GER) is seeking applicants for the position of Land Manager. GER is a 4000+ acre property of incomparable conservation value near Thomasville, GA. Dominated by mature longleaf pine woodlands, the property features what is perhaps the last remaining example of old-growth longleaf pine found on rich, clay-based soils.

Qualified applicants will have:

  • A career track record of applied conservation-based management of natural areas with organizations such as conservation NGOs or nonprofits, federal or state natural resource management agencies, or similar experience.
  • A bachelor’s degree or higher in a natural resource field, with training in conservation biology, ecology, and forestry or wildlife management.
  • Extensive experience with prescribed fire and working knowledge of fire ecology and fire science. Certification at progressively higher levels in the National Wildfire Coordinating Group (NWCG) system.
  • Experience with management and stewardship of rare and endangered plant and animal species. Knowledge of related regulations and governance.
  • Experience with ecological restoration of longleaf pine and associated groundcover communities.
  • Experience in management of invasive species with minimal impacts to other elements of the ecosystem.
  • Experience with infrastructure management of natural areas including roads, fences, culverts, and maintenance/operation of associated equipment required for such management.
  • Experience with site maintenance and operation of associated machinery.
  • Ability to lift at least 50 pounds, operate heavy machinery, and otherwise perform physical labor on uneven forest ground.
  • Familiarity with and comfort using basic technology tools and platforms. This includes proficiency with: computers and smartphones, email and calendar applications (e.g., Outlook, Gmail), basic internet navigation and online forms, and common productivity software (e.g., Microsoft Office or Google Workspace). Proficiency with using ArcGIS software for natural resource management and conservation purposes. The role may involve using digital tools for communication, scheduling, data entry, and collaboration.
  • 10-15 years of relevant professional experience, ideally in roles that demonstrate progressive responsibility and leadership.
  • Demonstrated strong interpersonal skills with the interest and ability to serve as a spokesperson for GER, including delivering presentations and engaging with stakeholders as an organizational representative.

Compensation and Benefits

Salary Range: Commensurate with experience and aligned with compensation for similar roles in nonprofit conservation organizations. Position is .75 – 1.0 FTE, negotiable.

Place of Work: The Manager is expected to perform their duties primarily on-site at GER’s property in Thomasville, Georgia. Occasional travel or transportation of equipment to other locations may be required based on operational needs.
