Qualifications:

• CPR and First Aid certification required.

About Us:  
We are a non-profit early childhood education center located in the town of Eastsound on Orcas Island, Washington. In 1991 KALEIDOSCOPE evolved from a grass roots effort. Our Mission is to provide safe, affordable, high-quality, consistent Preschool and childcare services while supporting the families of Orcas Island. We are proud to be the first licensed outdoor, nature-based preschool program by the Washington State Department of Children, Youth and Families.  
 
Position Overview:  
The lead teacher/forest summer program guide conducts outdoor classes for school aged children, 6-10 years old, collaborating with assistant teachers. Responsibilities include weekly curriculum design based on group interests, ongoing assessment of the program, and collaboration with support staff. The lead teacher will serve as an engaged role model in nature-based education, ensuring a safe and positive environment. Our Forest days are play-based, interest-led and child-inspired.  

Duration: The job requires a start date of no later than June 15th. Your commitment will be 35 – 40 hours per week.  Program weeks available are June 22-September 4. Commitment will be dependent on your availability and program enrollment.  

Key Responsibilities: 
Design and facilitate outdoor activities with a group of school aged children, working closely with assistant teacher, program manager, and executive director.  

Ensure a safe and positive environment: establish class agreements with students, communicate and maintain healthy boundaries and guidelines for fostering positive social interactions. Must be comfortable supporting children to navigate their feelings and communicate with one another when conflicts arise using a compassion scaffolding approach. 
 
Engage with parents and families at the beginning and end of each day to field any questions, concerns, or opportunities to share highlights from the day. 
 
Be an integral part of the team, contributing to daily operations with a positive attitude and work ethic. 

This position requires a blend of qualifications that span having experience in outdoor education as well as an understanding of, or desire to learn more about, nature-based pedagogy. Candidates should possess curiosity, if not a deep understanding of the local ecosystem with a commitment to helping young children develop their ecological identities through inquiry and play.
