Position Description

The Marketing & Development Manager is a full-time, benefits-eligible position that serves as Clean Lakes Alliance’s major event organizer and public-information officer. Under the direction of the Executive Director, this position works in close collaboration with team members to: 1) help expand our overall donor base; 2) help grow and diversify our audiences; and 3) ensure cohesive messaging around the organization’s brand, mission, and vision. The primary role of the position is to plan and orchestrate major fundraising and Friend-raising events and marketing initiatives, as well as to play an integral role on the development and communications team. This includes ensuring the effective and coordinated delivery of mission-critical messaging through multimedia outreach channels, particularly with respect to the organization’s vision, mission, goals, accomplishments, and stakeholder-involvement opportunities.  Job Duties

Marketing & Communications (40%): Define and implement the organization’s marketing strategy. Work in partnership with the Communications Manager to ensure that our mission, vision, values, and programs are broadly communicated. As public relations lead, grow and maintain the organization’s media presence while strengthening partnerships with local media outlets. Lead and be responsible for the annual, in-house production of the Greater Madison Lake Guide and printed Lake-O-Grams (newsletters). Work with outsourced graphic designers as needed. Manage service contracts and direct the development of short videos (as needed) to help educate and inform stakeholders about Clean Lakes Alliance’s work and priorities.

Events & Development (60%): Lead and be responsible for the planning, coordination, and implementation of Clean Lakes Alliance’s events, including the Frozen Assets Fundraiser (alternating years) and Festival, Community Breakfast (alternating years), Loop the Lake Bike Ride, and Fore! Lakes Golf Outing. Serve as staff lead to any ad-hoc event committees organized to support the planning and execution of major events. Develop related work plans and ensure the proper tracking and reporting of performance outcomes. Manage event-related logistics, permitting, promotion, ticketing, and day-of coordination. Support the overall growth and retention of Friends (currently 1,700+ individual donors) and Lake Partners (currently 250+ business/organization “members”) as part of the organization’s Annual Campaign. Play an external-facing role by networking with community partners to cultivate existing relationships and help secure $500-$3,000 event and program sponsorships. Set agendas and manage the Advancement Committee, a board member-chaired advisory body that supports the development team. Assist the Executive Director in sustaining donor participation at the $5,000/year and up  giving level.

Desired Qualifications & Attributes

  • Undergraduate degree and a minimum of 3-5 years of relevant professional experience in marketing, communications, and development
  • Experience and/or knowledge with planning and executing events
  • Interest in personal knowledge growth around topics related to water quality protection and advocacy
  • An entrepreneurial spirit and the ability to creatively integrate marketing, communications, and development to improve the organization’s reach and impact
  • Experience in development with a successful track record of fundraising
  • Exceptional interpersonal skills and solid track record of developing meaningful professional relationships
  • Exceptional written and verbal communication skills
  • A passion for visual and written storytelling
  • Experience working with the media and the cultural competency to engage with individuals from diverse backgrounds
  • Ability to work both collaboratively and autonomously within a small organization
  • Highly organized and adaptable, with an ability to manage multiple projects simultaneously
  • Ability to be flexible, resourceful, and detail-oriented in a fast-paced setting
  • Experience with email marketing services such as MailChimp, Constant Contact, CreateSend, or similar
  • Proficient in the use of Microsoft Word, Excel and PowerPoint
  • Experience, familiarity with, or willingness to gain proficiencies around the use of graphic-design and publication-layout software tools (i.e., InDesign, Photoshop, or other Adobe Creative Suite programs)
  • Experience using various social media platforms to engage with diverse audiences
  • Experience, familiarity with, or willingness to gain proficiencies around working with a Customer Relations Management (CRM) system (i.e., Blackbaud / Raiser’s Edge)
  • Experience, familiarity with, or willingness to gain proficiencies around the use of event-management tools (i.e., Eventbrite, RunSignUp)
  • Ability to translate complex scientific concepts and develop communications that are clear, concise and inspiring

Compensation & Benefits

  • Annual salary: $65,000-$80,000 (commensurate with experience) with potential for annual bonus based on meeting performance goals
  • Earned Time Off: 15 paid time-off days (120 hours) per calendar year (starting), prorated depending on start date

 Work Environment

The work environment and job specifications listed below are representative of those that must be met by an employee, with or without accommodations, to successfully perform the essential functions of this job.

  • Job location: Verex Plaza, 150 East Gilman Street, Suite 2600, Madison, Wisconsin 53703.
  • General business hours: Based on work hours within a Monday-Thursday, 8:00-5:00, and Friday, 8:00-12:00, schedule. Occasional evening and weekend work that generally corresponds with public meetings and Clean Lakes Alliance-hosted community events.
  • Access to a personal vehicle is required for traveling to project and event sites. All approved mileage is reimbursed at the federal rate. Must be able to work outdoors independently rain or shine.
  • Workdays may involve lifting and transportation of tools and equipment used in moderate-intensity outdoor work. Must be able to routinely lift and/or move up to 20 pounds and occasionally lift and/or move items up to 40 pounds.
  • Most work is performed at a desk in a small, open office environment, with occasional off-site work for the purpose of supporting Clean Lakes Alliance-hosted community events.
  • Travel to primary job location and various other locations for events, meetings, presentations, etc.
