The San Diego Natural History Museum (The Nat) was founded by amateur naturalists in 1874 and has played a major role in the conversation of our region. The Museum recently celebrated its 150th anniversary and completed a strategic plan focused on encouraging a love for nature, levering science and collections for conservation, and using our own voice to be here for nature.
The Nat is seeking a passionate, mission supporting part-time Museum Educator. The Museum Educator coordinates and facilitates programs for school groups, children, families, and adult audiences utilizing the Museum’s exhibits and collections. The Museum Educator fosters curiosity and a love of nature in guests of all ages, using an inquiry-based approach to interpretation. The Museum Educator creates an inclusive and engaging learning environment at public events and programs, as well as at school programs on- and off-site.
Duties/Responsibilities:
90% Program Facilitation & Implementation
- Deliver mission-driven interpretive presentations and facilitate educational programs for museum visitors and program participants of all ages.
- Provide a safe, secure, and inclusive atmosphere for program participants.
- Assist with customer service, coordination, and educational elements of public events and other Nat-centered programs such as Nat at Night, Nat Talks, and others.
- Manage and engage groups of up to 30 students in a classroom, in museum exhibits, and during outdoor activities.
- Facilitate school and youth programs including camps, classes, workshops, tours, story time, and others.
- Assist in the implementation of community outreach and community science initiatives. Represent the Museum at outreach events.
- Collaborate with museum volunteers to facilitate programs and assist with volunteer training activities.
10% Administrative and other duties
- Prepare and organize program materials.
- Clean and maintain program spaces and equipment.
- Provide feedback, edit, and update program documents, visual aids, and curricula.
- Set up/break down for events
- Assist with basic animal/plant care and cleaning as needed
- Other duties as assigned.
Qualifications:
Required:
- Coursework or degree in education-related field; and/or 1-2 years experience facilitating youth programming.
- Customer service, interpretation, or other experience working with children and families
- Excellent verbal and written communication skills
- Excellent customer service and Interpersonal skills
- Strong organizational skills and attention to detail
- Ability to problem-solve independently, and adapt to the needs of an audience
- Demonstrated commitment to diversity, equity, inclusion, and justice
- Knowledge of and interest in environmental science, natural history, and education
- Ability to work in a highly collaborative, fast-paced work environment
- Proficient with Microsoft Office Suite
- Ability to quickly learn & operate instructional technology and audio-visual equipment.
- Prolonged periods standing and walking
- Must be able to lift up to 50 pounds at a time
Preferred:
- First-aid / CPR certification
- Bilingual highly desired (Spanish, Tagalog, Vietnamese)
- Prior museum experience
This is a part-time, non-exempt position with benefits such as free admission into all of Balboa Park’s museums as well as free admission to the San Diego Zoo and Safari Park and more.
Work schedule is variable (0-29 hours per week) and includes some evening and weekend hours.
Pay: $20.00 per hour
