We are seeking a candidate who is pursuing or holds a degree in animal science, wildlife biology, or who has relevant experience working with large animals.

The ideal candidate will assist in all aspects of herd management, ensuring the health and welfare of our animals while supporting fiber production and farm operations. This position will serve as second in command to the herd manager, assume responsibilities in her absence, and play a critical role in refining, and improving existing protocols to enhance efficiency, animal care, and farm productivity.

The successful candidate must also be patient and do well under stressful situations. This is a physically demanding job, requiring you to be on your feet throughout the day, outside in all weather conditions sometimes lifting and carrying heavy and bulky objects. We have 75 musk oxen on 75 acres of land. We practice gentle and sustainable husbandry which dictates concern and respect for the animals in our herd on an individual basis. Herd assistant will be confident, firm, compassionate, and patient with the animals. You will be learning to work with these animals and see each has their own personality, which will direct how you interact with them and accomplish required tasks. Herd health is the main priority, candidate must be able to administer shots (IM & SubQ), and know basic husbandry. Socializing calves is a large priority every year to help our new herd members to establish mutual respect with staff, eliminate fear, and make possible our gentle handling protocols. A basic understanding of operant conditioning/ positive reinforcement training would be highly desired. Basic duties of cleaning water tanks, stalls, pens, giving out hay, feeding supplements, and assisting in all day-to-day clean-up and organization. All of this work occurs outdoors in whatever weather conditions are present in that moment; from sub-zero 80mph winds to dark rainy winter days to warm and sunny summer days.
