Salary: $6,735.00 - $9,065.00 Monthly

We are the Washington State Department of Natural Resources (DNR), and we are looking for a leader with good people skills and a strong background in forest land management to be the Rainier District Manager in the South Puget Sound Region.
The District Manager leads the State Uplands Units in planning, implementation, and financial tracking of projects assigned on State Trust Lands. This position manages the work unit's scheduled projects under the guidance and direction of the Assistant Region Manager for State Lands and applicable laws, policy, procedures, and plans.
This position is responsible for all upland management activities on approximately 149,000 acres of trust lands managed by the DNR in the Rainier District. Representing the Department’s interests to private operators, business, governmental officials, and the public where there is involvement in complex, sensitive issues affecting the District. This position provides input and recommends action on project proposals influencing State Trust Lands. Manages a total of 11 permanent and non-permanent professional staff, including hiring, training, and disciplinary action, with direct supervision of 3 permanent staff. Responsible for all field operations in the District including managing district timber sale staff to achieve a timber sale volume deliverable of approximately 29.5 million board feet of timber annually, managing district timber sale compliance staff in the administration of approximately 5-7 timber sales annually, and managing district engineering staff to ensure all existing and newly constructed roads are maintained and built to Forest Practice Standards. In addition, this position is accountable for achieving all RMAP engineering, land management, asset management, silviculture, and other program deliverables/standards in the district, planning and coordinating with appropriate region program leads.
Required Qualifications:
- A bachelor’s degree in forestry or a related natural sciences field, AND 5 years of relevant experience;
OR an equivalent combination of education and/or experience. - Knowledge of forest management objectives, timber management planning, and silvicultural principles.
- Knowledge of the Washington SEPA process, Forest Practices rules, laws, and practices, and associated agency policies.
- Knowledge of logging and forest road construction practices and technology.
- Ability to develop programs, timelines, and track accomplishments.
- Ability to work with minimal supervision.
- Ability articulates expectations, develops and mentors staff, and ensures accountability.
- Ability to monitor complex budgets.
