Natural Resources Technician

The Natural Resource Technician will support the Environmental and Natural Resources Department in the implementation of tribal conservation initiatives, with a primary focus on our oyster restoration project. This position provides hands-on experience in aquaculture, invasive species management, and environmental restoration. Under the guidance of the Director of Environmental and Natural Resources, the Natural Resources Technician will contribute to fieldwork, equipment operation, and data collection, while gaining valuable skills in environmental science and natural resource management. Additionally, they will support our Return to the River program through stewardship and community engagement activities.
Duties:
Assist with all aspects of the oyster restoration project, including reef construction, shell deployment, and habitat monitoring.
• Support invasive species treatment and forestry management efforts.
• Assist with fisheries monitoring and environmental data collection in the field.
• Help construct and maintain a mobile aquaculture unit.
• Participate in tribal conservation programs, including ecological restoration, habitat enhancement, and community engagement activities.
• Operate heavy equipment such as tractors, skid steers, and pontoon boats.
• Conduct basic equipment maintenance and upkeep.
• Attend trainings to build skills.
Qualifications:
• High school diploma or equivalent required; relevant college coursework or degree in environmental science, aquaculture, forestry, or related field preferred or relevant work experience.
• Previous experience in aquaculture, environmental restoration, or natural resources management is preferred but not required.
• Comfortable operating or learning to operate heavy equipment and watercraft.
• Basic mechanical skills and comfort with equipment maintenance.
• Experience with GPS, data entry, and field data collection methods is a plus.
• Strong work ethic, adaptability, and interest in natural resource conservation.
• Valid driver’s license and ability to travel frequently.
• Ability to lift 50+ lbs, work in rough terrain, and tolerate exposure to weather conditions.
Employment Details:
Classification: Part-time, 15-25 hours a week
Location: St. Stephens Church, VA. Position is in-person and requires travel between multiple locations including the Tribal Center, Fones Cliffs, and Belle Isle State Park.
Working Conditions: Work hours will vary based on seasonal needs and weather conditions. Some workdays may begin at dawn and extend up to 12 hours. The position requires outdoor work in a variety of weather conditions, including heat, cold, and rain.
