The Tahoe Institute for Natural Science (TINS) is seeking an enthusiastic and knowledgeable Outdoor Educator to teach local 5th grade students about Tahoe Natural History through engaging, place-based science lessons and activities at the incredible Sagehen Creek Field Station, just outside Truckee, CA.
This position is ideal for someone passionate about environmental education, natural history, and inspiring curiosity in young learners. As a member of our education team, you’ll be leading small groups (10–15 students) in a variety of hands-on activities such as games, nature journaling, field exploration, and local science investigations using curriculum developed by TINS staff.
Position Details:
- Seasonal, part-time position running September 15 – October 6 (with potential to extend for additional programs)
- Programming takes place Monday through Friday, with September 17 and 26 off
- Hourly pay: $20–$33/ hr, based on experience
- Location: Sagehen Creek Field Station, Truckee, CA
- Training: Provided by TINS prior to program start
- Schedule: Daily lessons run approximately 9:45 AM – 2:30 PM or 9:10 AM – 1:30 PM, with additional time allotted for set-up and clean-up each day
Key Responsibilities:
- Lead outdoor science programs for 5th grade students, focusing on Tahoe’s ecosystems and Natural History
- Foster a positive, inclusive learning environment that encourages curiosity and respect for nature
- Ensure student safety and engagement throughout the day
- Support logistical needs including group management, daily check-in/out, and meal breaks
- Communicate clearly with students, teachers, parents, and the Education Manager
- Follow and support all TINS safety protocols, emergency procedures, and behavior expectations
- Attend required training and staff meetings
Qualifications:
- Experience working with children, ideally in an outdoor or informal education setting
- Interest in ecology, environmental science, or natural history (Tahoe-area knowledge a plus!)
- Strong group management and communication skills
- Comfortable working outdoors for extended periods and on uneven terrain
- Ability to lift up to 50 pounds and hike up to 4 hours a day
- CPR/First Aid/AED certified (or willing to complete before start; training available)
- Must pass pre-employment background screening
