The Outdoor Learning & Camp Lead plays a key role in designing, coordinating, and delivering engaging outdoor education programs for children and youth. This position blends hands-on teaching, program coordination, and relationship-building with schools, families, and community partners. The ideal candidate is enthusiastic about outdoor learning, highly adaptable, and passionate about helping children feel welcome and confident in nature. The ideal candidate also recognizes and prioritizes the value of free play.
Key Responsibilities
Program Coordination & Planning
- Coordinate and manage summer camp programs, including scheduling, curriculum development, logistics, supplies, and staffing support
- Plan, organize and run school field trips and group visits during the academic year
- Collaborate with staff and partners to ensure programs align with our mission of nature equity and inclusion
Program Facilitation
- Lead engaging, developmentally appropriate outdoor education activities for children of various ages
- Facilitate nature-based learning experiences such as hikes, crafts, group games, exploration, environmental science activities, and play-based learning
- Create welcoming, inclusive environments where all children feel safe, supported, and empowered
Community & Relationship Building
- Communicate with teachers, families, and community partners to coordinate visits and program needs
- Represent the nature center positively in the community
- Support outreach efforts aimed at expanding access to outdoor education
Safety & Stewardship
- Maintain a safe learning environment following all organizational policies and risk management practices
- Model respect for nature and responsible outdoor behavior
Facilities & Site Maintenance
- Perform regular upkeep, cleaning, and maintenance of the barn, playscape, and surrounding grounds
- Monitor, organize, and maintain inventory of program supplies and materials
- Identify maintenance needs and report repairs or safety concerns in a timely manner and assist with basic repairs and preventative maintenance as needed
- Provide daily care for resident animals, including feeding, cleaning enclosures, and monitoring health and wellbeing
Qualifications & Skills
- Enthusiasm for outdoor education and connecting children with nature
- Experience working with children in educational, recreational, or camp settings
- Strong organizational and communication skills
- Flexibility, creativity, and comfort working outdoors in varied weather conditions
- Commitment to equity, inclusion, and serving diverse communities
- Ability to work collaboratively as part of a small, mission-driven team is required
- Reliable transportation, hold a valid driver’s license, clean driving record, and a minimum of three years of driving experience, with the ability to safely operate a 15-passenger van transporting children and youth.
- First Aid/CPR certification (or willingness to obtain)
