As part of the programming team of the Outdoor Programs Office (OPO), the Program Coordinator of Outdoor Stewardship delivers outdoor programming and oversees backcountry trails and facilities between Hanover and Mt. Moosilauke. The Program coordinator develops and assists in providing high-quality advising to students, including students in the Dartmouth Outing Club. The position is particularly focused on stewardship and outdoor leadership programming, ensuring it serves Dartmouth’s educational mission. In addition, the Program Coordinator of Outdoor Stewardship manages various aspects of the administrative work necessary to support programming and stewardship including budget management, oversight of seasonal trail staff, and filing end-of-year reports.

Required Qualifications 

  • 2+ years of relevant work experience in trail construction and or management
  • Demonstrated experience supervising and managing staff
  • Experience with camping and extended outdoor stays
  • Ability to drive a van under Dartmouth College Vehicle Policy
  • Commitment to diversity, inclusion, and cultural awareness and to serving the needs of a diverse population
  • Ability to apply sound problem-solving skills and work independently
  • Strong organizational and interpersonal skills
  • Outstanding written and verbal communication skills with students, faculty, administrators, alumni, and others
  • Comfort and facility in technological platforms, including MS Office & Google Suite products and database management systems; able to quickly adapt to new systems
  • Current Wilderness First Responder certification (or above) or the ability to obtain within 6 months of hire
  • Physical fitness and skills necessary to lead outdoor activities in remote locations
  • Ability to be on-call during evenings and weekends for emergency management. Frequently available after hours for events, meetings, and programs

Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience working in higher education, especially in roles involving student advising
  • Outdoor instruction certifications, such as:
    o Certified to operate a chainsaw
    o Leave No Trace Trainer or higher
    o Avalanche safety certifications, such as a Level 1 Pro or above from an AAA-certified training program

Program Coordination and Delivery (35%)

  • Designs and delivers seminars and trainings on trail maintenance and stewardship.
  • Develops and conducts trainings and leadership development seminars and workshops for Dartmouth students and others as needed to support Outdoor Programs’ educational activities.
  • Designs and implements outdoor programming and team building instruction, which will include multi-day programs and work on some nights, weekends, and holidays.
  • Ensures program standards are aligned with industry-standard practices. Assists in authoring, refinement, and development of policies, procedures and protocols.
  • Conducts program assessments to ensure programs are aligned with departmental and institutional goals and are achieving desired outcomes. Builds and maintains relationships with various stakeholders (students, alumni, campus partners, community members).

Program Administration (35%)

  • Coordinates and supports all aspects of seasonal trail maintenance and oversight, including treadway projects and the maintenance and construction of backcountry shelters and privies.
  • Supports the Alpine Steward program, including hiring and training the seasonal Alpine Steward.
  • Helps oversee the five-year plan for trail projects, including coordinating with outside trail partners like the Appalachian Trail Conservancy and White Mountain National Forest trails staff.
  • Recruits, trains, supervises and coordinates seasonal trail staff including students and volunteers.
  • Ensures high-quality trail and facility work that follows industry standards for environmental compliance and safety.
  • Supports the Associate Director in the oversight of state and federal grants for trail management projects.
  • Assists DOC and OPO in performing outreach and publicity through media production, social media, print and digital advertising.
  • Supports and leads experiential education programs such as Tuck Trips backpacking orientation programs.
  • Assists other staff with operations at Dartmouth Outdoor Rentals as needed.
  • Identifies, evaluates, and coordinates outside resources to provide professional instruction to student leaders; researches, compiles, and develops resources for student leaders.
  • Assists with termly risk management reviews; collects and analyses incident data, makes recommendations for corrective action, and coordinates review with RM committee.
  • Provides assistance as needed during DOC First-Year Trips orientation, including guidance to program managers, training program volunteers, and assisting with program logistics.
  • Significant responsibility for ensuring programs and execution of programs are conducted appropriately and within the parameters of complex policy.

Student Advising: (20%)

  • Builds positive, productive, professional relationships with student leaders.
  • Fosters an educational environment for students and staff that promotes wellbeing.
  • Serves as advisor to Dartmouth Outing Club (DOC) sub-clubs (and individual student leaders), as assigned—special focus on advising our trail stewardship program

Other General Support (10%)

  • Assists in other departmental support functions as needed, including processing financial transactions; issuing and cleaning equipment, etc.
  • Revises, updates and compiles manuals and documents for various club and office functions. Assists in stewardship and distribution of manuals.
  • Represents the office and the student organization at meetings and conferences.
  • Supports maintenance of Outdoor Programs Office facilities, including partnerships with Facilities Operations and Management, the OPO maintenance team, and outside contractors. Notifies Facilities Operations and Management with appropriately escalated repair-work orders in case of time-sensitive facility maintenance needs.
