Position Title: Outreach Coordinator-Education and Volunteers

Location: On-site at the Red-tail Land Conservancy office and preserves located in east central Indiana.

Hours: Full time, hours are moderately flexible with occasional work on evenings and weekends.

Reports to: Executive Director

Hiring Range: $18-$21/hour

About Red-tail:

Red-tail Land Conservancy (RLC) is a nonprofit land trust for east central Indiana. Our mission is to preserve, protect, and restore natural areas and farmland while increasing awareness of our natural heritage. Using strategic planning to accomplish this mission, we have grown steadily since our inception in 1999. As of 2024, Red-tail protects 3,000 acres of land through conservation easements and nature preserves.  Ten of our nature preserves are open to the public.  

Complementing our work to preserve natural areas, we foster conservation practices with landowners, engage volunteers in land stewardship activities, provide for outdoor recreation at our public nature preserves, and offer nature-based learning programs for youth and adults. 

Red-tail protects vital wildlife habitat and works to connect the residents of east central Indiana with nature.  A respected conservation organization, Red-tail collaborates with local organizations, universities, government agencies, and our east central Indiana community to promote conservation.  

General Summary:  

The purpose of this position is to grow and foster community engagement, educational programming, outreach volunteer coordination, and communications. Duties include working closely with community partners, coordinating events and creating engaging programs to connect people to nature.

In addition to the specific responsibilities, skills, and qualifications outlined in the job description, a candidate should be able to work well in a small staff environment and possess the enthusiasm and flexibility to help a growing organization thrive. Like all other positions within the organization, occasional duties will be performed outside the position’s typical scope of work.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

Community Outreach and Engagement

  • Cultivate and sustain strategic community relationships to grow RLC’s mission and volunteers.
  • Represent Red-tail at meetings, conferences, and community events
  • Lead and assist in the coordination and execution of Red-tail events and presentations 

Educational programming and volunteer coordination

  • Recruit and train outreach volunteers, cultivate a sense of community among volunteers, track attendance and hours, provide communication and recognition for volunteers
  • Develop, manage, and lead youth and adult educational programs, public and private events to connect people to nature and promote our mission of conservation
  • Foster relationships with teachers, community centers, and other partners to promote environmental education programming

Communications and marketing

  • Create engaging content for communication tools aligned with the organization’s voice
  • Develop and sustain relationships with media, including submitting press releases
  • Ensure organizational program offerings and communication are throughout the entire service area
  • Manage social media outreach, including engaging content creation for Facebook, Instagram, and other platforms 
  • Assist team to coordinate and execute communication plan - social media posts, blogs and mailings
  • Support collection, organization, and storage of photographs, quotes, and stories from events and activities

Administrative and project support

  • Perform administrative duties, such as assisting with mailings, utilizing the project management system, updating constituent and partner data in our CRM
  • Assist the Board of Directors Outreach Committee and Education committee

Required Skills and Qualifications:

  • BS or BA Degree from a higher institution or equivalent experience in communications, interpretation, education, journalism, environmental studies, natural resources, or a related field.
  • Experience or commitment to become proficient in issues of conservation, local wildlife and habitats, or other environmental and natural resource issues
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills
  • Creative thinking and idea-generation abilities
  • Ability to work in collaboratively in  a team or independently as needed
  • Ability to effectively coordinate and organize multiple projects and tasks
  • Proficient in basic computer programs and skills, including Microsoft Office and Google Suite
  • Ability to create engaging content for various platforms including social media, website blogs, and press releases
  • Experience planning and executing events
  • Experience recruiting, training, and cultivating volunteers
