ORGANIZATION AND POSITION SUMMARY:
A 501c3 nonprofit organization, the Glen Helen Association works to steward and strengthen Glen Helen nature preserve for present and future generations, safeguard the ecological, historical, and geological resources within its bounds, and utilize the preserve to offer life-shaping environmental learning to our students and visitors. The 1,125-acre preserve is home to the first overnight environmental learning facility in the Midwest, Ohio’s original facility for education and rehabilitation of birds of prey, and a 15-mile trail system open to the public.

The Outreach Manager coordinates public-facing activities and volunteer-driven efforts. Specific areas of responsibility include coordination of volunteers, and working with volunteers to fulfill organizational needs related to external communications, membership recruitment and retention, merchandising, public programs, and public facilities. The Outreach Manager manages the Nature Shop & Trailside Museum with volunteer support and oversees the Glen’s media & publications. 

This is a full-time position with weekend responsibilities. The regular schedule for this position is Wednesday-Sunday. 

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Volunteer Coordination
  • Actively recruit, train & match volunteers to areas across the organization
  • Supervise & communicate with volunteers, including mentorship and recognition
  • Maintain ongoing schedules and records of volunteers' work
  • Prepare codes of conduct and operating procedures for volunteers
  • Manage volunteer software 

Nature Shop & Trailside Museum Management

  • Coordinate merchandising activities, including budgeting, inventory management, volunteer staffing for the Glen Helen Nature Shop, cultivating and maintaining retail partnerships, and developing online sales and fulfillment
  • In collaboration with staff and volunteers, oversee the Trailside Museum, its exhibits and ambassador animals

Publications & Outreach

  • Create and fulfill, through staff and volunteer scheduling and supervision, a regular schedule of open hours for Glen Helen’s public-facing facilities such as the Trailside Museum and the Vernet Ecological Center
  • Work with the Admin Team to Coordinate Glen Helen Association membership outreach
  • Coordinate production and dissemination of Glen Helen’s public messaging and publications, including the quarterly magazine, annual report, brochures, quarterly calendar of public events, monthly eblast, social media posting schedule, minor website updates and the annual wall calendar
  • Represent and promote the Glen at public and outreach events such as at our annual Whoo Cooks for You fundraiser dinner, Yellow Spring Street Fair, Earthday Community Celebration, Yellow Spring Brewery Collaboration

Other Duties

  • Participate on collaborative committees
  • Participate in staff functions, including preparing periodic reports and attending meetings
  • Additional duties and responsibilities as agreed upon

QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Experience coordinating groups or teams, including guiding others towards a common goal.
  • Experience in preparing clear and engaging communications for various audiences.
  • Demonstrated ability to plan and execute projects effectively, ensuring all aspects and details are completed accurately.
  • Solid technological skills and willingness to learn new software applications.
  • Passion for Glen Helen's mission and our conservation and education work.
  • Experience in environmental nonprofits is valuable, but not required.
  • Experience in customer-facing roles is an asset.

SKILLS:

  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills, and ability to communicate effectively and diplomatically with a wide range of audiences
  • Ability to troubleshoot challenges with patience and creativity
  • Willingness to regularly work weekends, and periodically work evenings
  • Ability to thrive in a small, growing organization
  • Familiarity with specific software a plus: Google Suite, Square, Constant Contact, Canva, Volunteer Hub.  

CERTIFICATES, LICENSES, REGISTRATIONS:

  • Bachelor’s degree or equivalent experience in related field
  • Valid driver’s license
  • BCI/FBI background check required

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:

  • Ability to communicate verbally and digitally with staff and public
  • Ability to work in an office environment
  • Ability to move up and down stairs
  • Ability to move 10-20 pounds
