Why does the job exist?
The purpose of this position, which is assigned to a lake-based New Mexico State Park, is to assist visitors, enforce state laws, ensure the grounds and facilities are clean and safe for enjoyable recreation, and to oversee the park interpretive education programing, and lifeguard training and supervision during the swimming season. This will include law enforcement duties to include regular patrol of campground facilities and waters in the area, ensuring compliance with Park rules/regulations and safety regulations. This position is responsible for the general supervision, training and assigning jobs of seasonal staff and park volunteers. The position will monitor park operations, while performing general functions of the park administration, fee enhancement, related law enforcement and fulfill managerial requirements when the Park Superintendent or Park Ranger Supervisor are unavailable. The position will track and monitor programs presented to meet reporting requirements.
Ideal Candidate
Bachelor's degree in Parks and Recreation Management, Environmental Sciences, Forestry, Criminal Justice or Wildlife Management from an accredited college or university and two (2) years of experience in parks and recreation management, natural resources, biology, environmental sciences, forestry, criminal justice and/or wildlife management. Must be a certified NM peace officer.
- The ideal candidate will have a strong working knowledge of parks and recreation management with experience in Law Enforcement.
- The candidate must be able to perform in stressful situations requiring prompt decision making with significant consequences.
- The candidate must have excellent communication, organizational skills, and be able to provide outstanding customer service.
- The candidate must have at least two years' experience with managing swimming areas and managing lifeguards.
- The ideal candidate will have previous certification as a lifeguard.
Minimum Qualification
Associate degree in Parks and Recreation Management, Environmental Sciences, Forestry, Criminal Justice, or Wildlife Management from an accredited college or university and two (2) years of experience in parks and recreation management, natural resources, biology, environmental sciences, forestry, criminal justice, and/or wildlife management. Any combination of education from an accredited college or university in a related field and/or direct experience in this occupation totaling four (4) years may substitute for the required education and experience. Must be a certified NM peace officer.
