Wake County Parks, Recreation and Open Space seeks a Park Technician of Programming & Education for Historic Yates Mill and Crowder County Parks.  We’re looking for a self-motivated individual with proven skills in program development, communications strategies and volunteer coordination to join our growing team.  Flexibility, interpersonal communication and public relations will be keys to the successful candidate as a frontline staff member whose job tasks shift day by day and occasionally hour by hour.

Crowder and Historic Yates Mill County Parks offer our community highly sought-after services such as outdoor recreation, cultural history and environmental education, and nature viewing.  As a member of our team, you’ll assist in delivering these services while regularly interacting with our community and supporting daily operations and maintenance of our facilities. 

In 2018, Wake County voters passed a $120 million Parks, Greenways, Recreation and Open Space bond. Park improvements are planned at each park including integrating 96 additional acres of land at Crowder County Park and enhancing the visitor experience at both parks. You will be actively involved as we plan the future of these parks.

This position is based at Historic Yates Mill County Park and offers exciting and unique opportunities at both Historic Yates Mill and Crowder County Parks.

As a Park Technician of Programming & Education you will:

  • Assist with all aspects of park programming including developing, coordinating, implementing and evaluating programs at Historic Yates Mill and Crowder County Parks
  • Be the Volunteer Coordinator, which includes recruiting, training, supervising, and scheduling volunteers for a variety of services within the parks
  • Provide excellent customer service while ensuring our park facilities are open, clean, and safe for the community to enjoy while being flexible in a dynamic environment to meet the needs of all visitors
  • Collaborate with our Communications Team to effectively use print, digital and social media to promote our services
  • Oversee the park’s artifact, archive and library collections
  • Work closely with the Assistant Park Manager of Programming & Education to accomplish park and Division-specific objectives
  • Assist with EVERYTHING else that it takes to operate a park including opening/closing facilities, janitorial duties, reservation and registration management and more

The Basics (Required Education and Experience)

  • High school diploma or GED
  • One year of experience working in a park setting, providing educational programming, maintaining facilities or landscaping
  • Valid Driver's License and "safe" driving record
  • CPR certification within one year of employment
  • Equivalent education and experience are accepted

Beyond the Basics (Preferred Education and Experience)

  • Bachelor’s degree in parks and recreation, public history, forestry, natural resource or related education field
  • Two years of experience related to this position description including park programming, supervisory, computer skills including Active Net, PowerPoint, Office 365
  • Proven customer service skills
  • Experience engaging diverse populations in program development
  • Experience with developing communications materials, social media platforms and engaging audiences
  • Experience with using a variety of technological applications to manage and deliver programs and services
  • Acquired or in process of attaining NC Environmental Education Certification or equivalent

Work Schedule: 40 hours per week including mornings, evenings, nights, weekends and holidays

Hiring Range: 24.72 – 29.36

Market Range: 24.72 - 29.36
