SUMMARY: This position is responsible for the planning, organization, and facilitation of Parks in Focus programming that provides opportunities for middle school youth to explore nature and our Nation’s public lands through photography and outdoor learning.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES: include the following, although other tasks and duties may be assigned.

  • Plan and implement Parks in Focus programming consisting of day outings, weekend campouts, and a summer immersion trip. 
  • Attend a multiday training program (dates TBD).
  • Become familiar with the Parks in Focus® mission, goals, curriculum, and resources.
  • Visit activity sites for scouting and risk management planning.
  • Host informational meetings for participants, parents, and partners.
  • Finalize activity itineraries and handle all necessary logistics.
  • Lead assigned Parks in Focus® activities and field trips.
  • Ensure activities run smoothly and safely.
  • Teach photography curricula and meet educational goals for each activity.
  • Work with participants to develop their photography skills.
  • Lead games, team building exercises, journaling, art, environmental science, and other relevant educational activities with participants.
  • Help engage and motivate participants, partner staff, and volunteers.
  • Ensure activities are well documented through photos and videos.
  • Ensure all participant forms and evaluation data are gathered and complete.
  • Provide scheduled updates and reports to supervisor.
  • Organize all photographs, video footage, and evaluation data.
  • Prepare photo highlights for all participants, staff, and partners.
  • Understand and implement the terms and requirements of grant funding for Parks in Focus
  • Maintain all program property and equipment 
  • Utilize appropriate technology including but not limited to Microsoft Office, Outlook, Excel, and Publisher
  • Attends all mandatory meetings, conferences and trainings.
  • Assist community liaison in building partnerships and securing necessary donations.
  • Travel to various sites and TrueNorth.
  • Other duties as assigned.
  • Maintain regular and consistent attendance and punctuality.

SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITIES:
This position does not have any supervisory responsibilities.

EDUCATION AND QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Must be willing to provide fingerprints for a criminal background check.
  • Valid Michigan Driver’s License and the ability to travel to and from sites on a regular basis.
  • Wilderness First Aid Certification desired

LANGUAGE SKILLS:
Ability to write reports, business correspondence, and necessary lesson planning modules. Effective oral and written communication skills.

PHYSICAL DEMANDS:

  • This position requires a high level of physical activity in outdoor, often remote, environments. The role involves leading and supervising youth on extended hiking and camping trips, including sleeping outdoors in tents and navigating varied terrain. The physical demands of this job include, but are not limited to, the following:
  • Ability to hike up to 6 miles per day over uneven, sandy, or rocky terrain while carrying a backpack.
  • Extended periods of standing, walking, bending, stooping, crouching, and reaching.
  • Ability to set up and take down tents and other camping gear.
  • Comfort and endurance to sleep outdoors in a tent for multiple consecutive nights.
  • Occasional lifting and carrying of supplies or equipment weighing up to 40 pounds.
  • Tolerance for exposure to insects, wildlife, dirt, dust, and outdoor allergens.
  • While performing the responsibilities of the job, the employee is required to talk and hear.
  • The employee is often required to sit and use motor skills.
  • The employee is required to stand, walk, reach with arms and hands, climb or balance, and to stoop, kneel, crouch or crawl.
