Part-Time or Seasonal Natural Resources Technician

Position Description:
The Morris County Park Commission is seeking Part-Time Technicians and Seasonal Technicians to work in its Natural Resources Management Unit. The Technicians will be directed to work on programs and projects addressing natural resources management issues such as wildlife management, vegetation management, forestry, insect and disease management, soil and water conservation, habitat enhancement, stream bank stabilization and enhancement, riparian buffers, mitigation of trail impacts to natural resources and other related areas as necessary.
Essential Functions:
- Assists with the implementation of stewardship plans.
- Manages invasive plant species using mechanical, manual and chemical control methods.
- Assists with the implementation of wildlife management programs.
- Assists with habitat enhancement projects including forest regeneration, meadow restoration, and streambank and shoreline restoration.
- Installs and maintains deer exclosure fencing.
- Assists in the management/oversight of volunteer groups.
- Assists with data entry utilizing ArcGIS, Microsoft Access and Excel.
- Utilizes GIS software and GPS hardware for field data collection, project monitoring data entry and mapping applications.
- Utilizes mechanical equipment to accomplish vegetation management objectives (proper operating/safety training included)
- Keeps accurate and complete activity logs, including timesheets, maintenance records, monitoring data sheets and other forms as assigned.
- Completes all other tasks and projects as assigned.
Qualifications:
- Completion of or enrollment in Bachelor’s degree program in ecology, natural resources management, environmental science, or a related field.
- Ability to conduct physically strenuous work in rugged terrain and in adverse weather conditions.
- Plant/Animal Identification skills/Basic knowledge of the flora and fauna of northern New Jersey
- Knowledge of invasive species identification and management is preferred.
- Knowledge of the use of GIS applications like ESRI Field Maps is preferred.
- Ability to perform all tasks and work activities independently and/or as part of a team.
- Possession of a valid New Jersey driver’s license.
- Ability to obtain a NJ Pesticide Operator’s License while employed with the Morris County Park Commission.
- Minimum Age Requirement is 18 years old
Work Schedule and Compensation:
The salary for this position is $17.00/hour with a maximum 28-hour work week for part-time, or a 40-hour work week with a maximum length of employment of 6 months for seasonal. Some weekend and night hours may be required. Housing is not provided
