In cooperation with the National Park Service Yosemite National Park, the Great Basin Institute (GBI) is recruiting a Participatory Exhibits Specialist to work cooperatively with National Park Service staff to bring knowledge, innovation and creative thinking to the Museum and Media Branch. There is a movement at Yosemite National Park to move towards participatory museum exhibits utilizing Audience Centered Experience techniques. The goal of this position is to develop opportunities for meaningful engagement that encourage visitors to connect more thoughtfully with the resource, Yosemite National Park, as a whole. The successful applicant will work with the Museum and Media Branch at Yosemite National Park and focus on the following projects:
The Participatory Exhibits Specialist will assist park interpretive staff by:
- Designing, developing, revising, and implementing innovative, hands-on temporary exhibits within the Yosemite Exploration Center.
- Combining naturalist skills and project management skills to create new visitor experiences that will inform upcoming exhibit rehabilitation.
- Preparing and tracking budgets.
- Tracking visitor engagement with temporary exhibits.
- Evaluating each mini-exhibit. Examine successes, failures, and other learnings in a series of written reports that will be disseminated to interpretive staff.
- Providing frontline interpretive service and interpretation at the Yosemite Valley Welcome Center.
- Providing interpretive programming like walks and talks.
Location:
Yosemite National Park - Not just a great valley, but a shrine to human foresight, the strength of granite, the power of glaciers, the persistence of life, and the tranquility of the High Sierra. First protected in 1864, Yosemite National Park is best known for its waterfalls, but within its nearly 1,200 square miles, you can find deep valleys, grand meadows, ancient giant sequoias, a vast wilderness area, etc.
Contract Timeline:
- 52-week appointment beginning in September 2025, or upon availability and successful completion of a Department of Interior (DOI) Background Investigation (BI)
- Full-time, 40 hours per week
Compensation:
- Wage: 28.75 hourly rate
- $100 Weekly Housing Stipend
- Health, Dental, Vision Insurance premiums are covered 100% by GBI. Available on the first day of the month following the start of employment.

Qualifications
Technical requirements:
- Bachelor’s degree or credits/coursework towards a Bachelor’s degree in museum studies, education or related field, and/or commensurate experience;
- Experience developing interactive museum exhibits;
- Experience creating interpretive materials (e.g.: pamphlets, posters) or displays;
- Knowledge of and/or experience developing multi-media programs;
- Ability to communicate clearly and efficiently with the public, coworkers, and Technical Advisors both orally and in writing, and respond in a professional manner to inquiries from the public regarding work activities;
Successful applicants must complete a Department of Interior (DOI) Background Investigation (BI) or submit paperwork to NPS human resources indicating an active and fully adjudicated BI has already been completed prior to beginning position.
