The Piping Plover Monitor is a Limited-Term Employment Position with employment starting in early May and ending by October. From June through mid to late August, the plover monitor will spend four-day periods living on Chequamegon Point within the Bad River Reservation to monitor the wellbeing of plovers and to educate Apostle Islands National Lakeshore guests. The Piping Plover Monitors will work for the Bad River Band, and they will work in collaboration with NPS staff. Other partners include the US Fish and Wildlife Service, the Wisconsin DNR, and The Nature Conservancy.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities include the following. Other duties may be assigned by the Wildlife Program Manager or the supervisor.

  • Informing and educating visitors about Piping Plover breeding ecology and ensuring that disturbance of Piping Plover nest sites does not occur.
  • Monitors will keep detailed records of Piping Plover's behavior, the status of their nest, and additional sightings while on Long Island. 
  • Monitors will assist in the finding of plover nests and the building and maintaining of predator enclosures around the nests. 
  • Monitors must be able to keep detailed notes and submit a written summary at the end of the season.
  • Monitors will conduct other bird surveys as needed.
  • Must be able to work with limited supervision
  • Other duties as assigned by direct supervisor and/or the Natural Resources Director

Education and/or Experience:

Required:

High School Diploma or its equivalent.

Preferred:

  • S./B.A. degree in a natural resources field. Birding experience, which includes such skills as bird behavior observation, species identification, nest location, and use of binoculars and spotting scopes for lengthy periods.

This position is contingent on the required ability to pass a general background check

  • Strong oral and written communication skills
  • Knowledge of computers and software, computer applications, and good typing skills
  • Ability to work in diverse settings and communicate effectively with a broad range of related systems.
  • Maintain strict compliance with Privacy Act requirements and Confidentiality Policy.

Reasoning Ability:

  • Problem-solving at times and remain flexible and open-minded.
