Job Description: The employee will assist with many aspects of ongoing research and plant conservation, with particular emphasis on plant-animal interactions, plant identification in long-term vegetation monitoring plots, and seed collection and propagation. Other duties include data entry, working with camera traps, and other lab/office work as needed. This 17-month position begins August 2025 (with possible extension) and reports directly to the Plant Ecology Research Associate.
Location: The Jones Center is located on Ichauway, a 28,000-acre property in southwest Georgia between Albany and Bainbridge. The Center’s research, education, and conservation programs seek to understand, demonstrate, and promote excellence in natural resource management and conservation. Ichauway contains 16,000 acres of longleaf pine woodlands, 1,000 acres of wetlands, and 25 miles of stream and river ecosystems. An 18,000-square-foot research laboratory houses scientists’ laboratories, a central analytical laboratory, and two field labs. Qualifications:
- M.S. degree in biology, botany, horticulture, plant ecology, habitat management, or a related field. Alternatively, B.A. or B.S. with a minimum of three years of relevant fieldwork experience.
- Previous experience with seed collection, plant identification in the southeastern U.S., and rare plant conservation preferable.
- Experience with trail cameras and wildlife identification (especially birds) is desirable.
- Excel, GIS (including Field Maps), and laboratory-related experience is also preferable.
- Field work requires moderate to strenuous physical activity in the field, under demanding conditions (e.g., heat, high humidity, exposure to poison oak/ivy, and insects).
- Must possess a valid driver’s license.
- Ability to independently follow instructions.
- Ability and interest in leading technician crews.
