POSITION SUMMARY

Are you passionate about wildlife, conservation and birds-of-prey? The Hancock Wildlife Foundation has a unique position available for a Program Coordinator- Raptor Conservation & Management. This position will play a central role in planning, implementing, and evaluating raptor conservation, education and stewardship programs in the MetroVancouver and Fraser Valley region. Working closely with HWF’s team, volunteers, and other Ministry staff, this role will focus on habitat restoration opportunities, wildlife mitigation, raptor surveys and monitoring, raptor banding and trapping efforts, community education, and developing partnerships to support our conservation goals. This role would also involve the engagement and solicitation of public monitoring and documentation of known wildlife habitat features such as Bald Eagle, Osprey, Peregrine Falcon and Great Blue Heron nests across the south coast of BC. The ideal candidate will have experience in wildlife conservation, project coordination, and stakeholder engagement, with a passion for protecting and advocating for birds-of-prey and their habitats.

The Hancock Wildlife Foundation (HWF), established in 2006, is a leader in wildlife conservation, education and outreach with a focus on raptor species, particularly Bald Eagles. Our mission is to “promote conservation of wildlife and their habitats through science, education, and stewardship.” We are renowned for our pioneering use of live-streaming webcams to bring the lives of Bald Eagles and other wildlife to a global audience and for advancing habitat conservation projects in British Columbia.

To support these endeavors, we are seeking a dedicated Program Coordinator to help implement, manage, and grow our raptor conservation initiatives and support the province in wildlife management efforts.

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES

Program Implementation and Coordination

  • Coordinate and manage raptor conservation projects, ensuring goals, timelines, and deliverables are met.
  • Support and facilitate growing raptor databases, including front and backend management
  • Work with partners to identify, prioritize, and implement habitat restoration and mitigation efforts.
  • Assist in conducting raptor population surveys, monitoring activities, and data collection.
  • Prepare and submit progress reports to HWF and other stakeholders.
  • Partnership Development and Collaboration
  • Foster relationships with First Nations, government agencies, academic institutions, NGOs, and local communities.
  • Act as a liaison between HWF and other partners to align conservation efforts.
  • Represent HWF when appropriate, at meetings, workshops, and public events.
  • Community Engagement and Education
  • Develop and deliver educational programs to promote awareness of raptor conservation.
  • Engage volunteers and community members in citizen science initiatives and habitat projects.
  • Coordinate outreach materials, including social media content, newsletters, and presentations.
  • Create, manage and build website materials for public distribution
  • Fundraising and Grant Management
  • Assist in identifying funding opportunities and writing grant proposals to support program sustainability and position funding into the future.
  • Manage budgets for assigned projects and ensure funds are allocated appropriately.

QUALIFICATIONS AND EXPERIENCE

Required:

  • Passion for wildlife conservation, particularly avian wildlife, including raptors.
  • Degree or diploma in environmental science, biology, natural resource management, or a related field.
  • At least 3 years of applied biology and or other relevant experiences relating to wildlife or natural sciences.
  • Strong written and verbal skills and ability to help prepare publications and reports.
  • Proven experience in project coordination, preferably in conservation or environmental programs.
  • Ability to work independently with minimal supervision and self-motivation
  • Ability to meet key deadlines and project deliverables
  • Strong interpersonal and communication skills to engage with diverse stakeholders.
  • Proficiency in digital tools (e.g., GIS, Microsoft Office, social media platforms).
  • Valid driver’s license and access to a personal vehicle.

Preferred:

  • Specialization in fisheries or wildlife biology would be considered an asset.
  • Experience working with First Nations communities and knowledge of Indigenous-led conservation practices.
  • Knowledge of raptor ecology, behavior, and habitat requirements.
  • Experience in grant writing and fundraising.
  • Familiarity with British Columbia’s natural landscapes and ecosystems.TERM AND COMPENSATION

Employment Type: Part-time or Full Time depending on candidate
Compensation: $40,000-60,000 (CAD) annually, commensurate with experience and position type. There will be an expectation that the candidate is able to help secure grant funding to support future salary costs.
Location: Flexible, with preference for candidates within a 1-hour radius of Surrey, BC.
Term: Initial contract will be for one year from start date.
