Position Summary         

The IIC is seeking applicants for a Program Manager. The incumbent in this position will be integral to the strategic growth of the IIC, which started operations in January 2020. The Program Manager will be an active team member focusing on further developing and implementing the IIC communication strategy and supporting external-facing functions to promote and develop the work of the IIC.

The Program Manager will be responsible for designing, implementing, and coordinating the IIC’s communication strategy that will broaden the diversity of the IIC partner network and will focus on equity-centered conservation. The Program Manager will collaborate with the IIC team and affiliates to develop innovative public engagement campaigns that will foster interdisciplinary and cross-sector collaboration and will amplify the IIC’s impact. The Program Manager will also work closely with W&M Advancement to design and implement an innovative stewardship campaign and will design and lead the IIC’s fundraising strategy that will include identifying potential grant opportunities, supporting grant writing and management, and contributing to donor communications.

The position is responsible for (but not limited to)

  • Review and implementation of the IIC’s communication strategy that includes identification of target audiences, tactics, communication systems and processes, and actions that achieve the goals of the IIC including developing in-person and online communications and promoting the IIC on social media and the Internet;
  • Evaluate the outcomes of communications activities and adapt tactics to ensure strategy meets IIC objectives
  • Work with William & Mary teams to update and streamline IIC brand guidelines for communications, update and maintain the IIC website as a tool for partner engagement, and manage a schedule of donor communications
  • Manage and coordinate message and content development working closely with internal and external audiences
  • Design and implement digital marketing campaigns including web, social, and email and manage our national Twitter, Facebook, Instagram, and LinkedIn accounts, and propose potential other platforms as appropriate
  • Write and develop content for the IIC’s monthly e-newsletters, stewardship materials, reports, and high-level campaign communications
  • Provide writing and editing support for the IIC’s fundraising efforts, which may include co-writing grant proposals or editing proposals written by PIs
  • Support the development and management of IIC’s partner tracking systems needed to build IIC network and keep track of partner interactions
  • Organize and coordinate IIC programming, including establishing and organizing meetings, workshops, and events with internal and external conservation partners
  • Researching opportunities for external funding, making initial contact with funding partners, and assisting with the preparation of research proposals and reports

There will also be opportunities for the Program Manager to be involved in conservation-focused curricula and research projects, depending on their interests, as well as opportunities for domestic and international travel.

Required Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree in a relevant field (e.g., communications, creative writing, journalism, conservation, or international development). years of experience designing and implementing communication campaigns and strategies that meet organizational
  • Experience with mission-oriented strategic communications and success as a creative and effective communicator
  • Knowledge and experience working in a dynamic media environment, navigating platforms and technologies, to produce user-focused content and engagement
  • Passion for telling stories in creative ways
  • Proficiency with many of the platforms and tools currently used by the IIC: Hootsuite, Twitter, Facebook, LinkedIn, Instagram, YouTube, and Microsoft Office Suite
  • Prior grant writing or fundraising experience
  • Knowledge of current conservation topics and strong interest in working on conservation issues
  • Demonstrates excellence in management and organizational skills
  • A demonstrated commitment to the principles of diversity, equity, and inclusion

Preferred Qualifications             

  • Master’s degree in marketing, communications, development, or other relevant fields
  • Experience in conservation research and/or conservation practice or educational concentration in a conservation-related field
  • Experience with travel abroad, to non-English speaking countries
  • Previous knowledge of or desire to learn languages other than English
  • Prior supervisory experience
