Summary

Willowsford Conservancy is seeking a full-time Ranger in what is primarily a field-based, hands-on role. The position reports to the Land Stewardship Manager and involves working with a team of full-time and seasonal employees in performing trail & facility maintenance, land & habitat restoration,  tree work, as well as education and volunteer engagement.

Duties

  • Develop and implement an annual wildlife survey or surveys of smaller areas, such as wildlife corridors. Complete report with findings and recommendations for next steps.
  • Coordinate and conduct training for Bluebird monitoring volunteer program. Liaise with Loudoun Wildlife Conservancy to share our annual findings.
  • Conduct bird box placement and monitoring for other species, such as American Kestrels, wood ducks, etc., and recommend other wildlife habitat to be installed and monitored.
  • Support or deliver education programs about nature-based topics or recreational activities with children, school groups, scouting groups, and adults.
  • Conduct stream monitoring for water quality (benthic invertebrates and salt watch) and look for ways to engage volunteers and grow the program.
  • Receive training on the oversight of our Deer Management Program for the purpose of eventually managing this program.
  • Periodically write Field Notes for the Conservancy blog on nature-based topics and share wildlife photos, videos, or other content for social media and digital marketing.
  • Repair and maintain nature trails, small structures, and land resources. Inspect and clear trails and other Conservancy land of over-growth, fallen trees and debris.
  • Construction and maintenance of trail features such as erosion control, trail resurfacing, boardwalks, bridges, and culverts.
  • Operate and maintain equipment, facilities, vehicles, and tools. Perform routine maintenance, cleaning, and light repairs.
  • Promote the mission of Willowsford Conservancy and serve as its representative to residents and the larger community.
  • Perform regular mowing and string trimming.
  • Assist in land management practices such as invasive plant spraying or mechanical removal, tree plantings, prescribed burns, and habitat improvement.
  • Assist with tree removal and safely operate and maintain chainsaws.
  • Other duties include, but are not limited to, event setup, firewood production, snow removal.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

  • Current on relevant issues and methods such as sustainable forestry, meadow and grassland management, wetland and water resources, wildlife management, and outdoor recreation.
  • Hands-on experience in land management, arboriculture, and native and invasive species management.
  • Strong communication skills.
  • Proficiency with MS Office, data and records management, GIS/GPS software and equipment; basic skills using ArcGIS software.
  • Ability to work effectively in a small team environment.
  • Proficiency in safely operating equipment and tools, including chain saws, mowers, tractors, hand tools and common forestry tools.

Qualifications

  • BS degree in Natural Resources Management, Forestry or a related field or equivalent.
  • At least two years professional experience in natural resource management or additional education experience in such field
  • VA Certified Pesticide Applicator’s license or willingness to obtain license
  • Knowledge of NOVA flora and fauna, ecological communities, and processes; strong field ID skills for native and invasive species.
  • Good driving record and valid Virginia driver’s license.
  • Successful completion of pre-employment driving record check, background and reference checks.
  • Must possess or have the ability to obtain First Aid and CPR certifications within 4 months of employment.

Work Environment and Physical Demands 

  • The position requires extensive physical activity over extended periods of time, including walking over rough terrain, standing, stooping, pushing, pulling, heavy lifting, and operating equipment.
  • Work is performed primarily outdoors in variable weather and work conditions, such as hot or cold temperatures, rain, show, dirt, dust, fumes, loud noises, and exposure to wildlife, insects and plants.
  • Safety and personal protective gear must be worn as required to ensure that all activities are completed in a safe and effective manner.
  • Some weekend and evening work required.

Qualifications

  • High school diploma or equivalent. Graduation from a technical school preferred.
  • At least 1 year of directly related experience operating equipment, performing basic tree work, and completing relevant maintenance and repair, preferably involving parks, nature trails and open space.
  • Handyman skills such as carpentry and good mechanical aptitude.
  • Chainsaw skills preferred.
  • Ability to communicate effectively in English, orally and in writing, and to interact well with others.
  • Strong work ethic and interest in learning new skills; ability to work independently and within a team.
  • Ability to maintain records and follow schedules, policies, and procedures.
  • Valid Virginia driver’s license, reliable transportation, and safe driving record.
  • Possess or have the ability to obtain First Aid and CPR certifications.
  • Successful completion of a pre-employment driving record check; background and reference checks; and random drug/alcohol screening.
