Serves as a member of a recreation crew supporting the Maroon Bells Scenic Area, a very popular area with special regulations to preserve its natural beauty and wildlife, and to ensure visitors can continue to enjoy the wildlife viewing, hiking, and scenic views. Members are expected to serve 80 hours within the two week pay period, ten-hour service days are the norm. Generally, you will serve 4 10 hour days over a week period. Members may have 8-day hitches during their service and may serve over the weekend. Schedule determined by host site.

Duties for this position consist of a variety of patrols, shifts, and projects in support of the developed recreation program and Maroon Bells Scenic Area including:

  • Operate the Welcome Station at the Maroon Bells to collect fees for day use and camping.
  • Manage bike, foot, and vehicular traffic. 
  • Record Welcome Station data concerning sales and Special Use Permit holders. 
  • Monitor trails and developed recreation sites to provide visitors with information about recreation opportunities and regulations, protect wilderness resources, and inform visitors about wildlife presence and proper visitor safety.
  • Report human-wildlife encounters to the district Wildlife Biologist.
  • Provide information to the public at the Maroon Bells Information Center on ecology, geology, wildlife, and history of the Maroon Bells Scenic Area.
  • Clean and maintain developed recreation sites including campgrounds and trailheads.
  • Construct, repair, and rehabilitate developed recreation sites, facilities, and trails.
  • Implement and maintain travel management devices such as signs, gates, and other closure methods.
  • Assist with emergency situations and communicate with Aspen Ambulance, Aspen Police, Pitkin County Sheriffs and Aspen Mountain Rescue regarding emergency information.
