Resource Planning Analyst

The Resource Planning and Biometric Services (RPBS) group is responsible for providing forest planning services which support client land management and forest investment decisions, as well as biometric services necessary for planning projections, inventory analysis, and data systems. The successful Resource Planning Analyst will work in a team environment with planning analysts, biometricians, and other AFM operating groups to provide resource planning services to customers across AFM’s operating regions.

Principal Duties and Responsibilities:
- Develop harvest schedule models for a variety of customers across AFM’s operating areas using Remsoft’s spatial planning system (Woodstock Optimization Studio).
- Utilize models to conduct discounted cash flow analyses for timberland investments, acquisitions, and valuations
- Work collaboratively with clients and AFM staff to deliver on AFM’s client-centric approach to the strategic and tactical planning process.
- Compile, normalize, and validate data inputs for planning models
- Analyze and explain impacts to carbon stocking and ESG reporting metrics from timber management decisions.
- Support client sustainability goals by translating forest management data and model results into actionable ESG insights.
- Research financial inputs including but not limited to silvicultural costs, forest product pricing, and forecasts.
- Interpret and communicate model results clearly to a variety of customers, through written and oral means and virtual and in-person meetings
- Market AFM’s Resource Planning services and promote general AFM business development at professional meetings and conferences.
Qualifications:
- Master’s degree in Forestry or Natural Resource Management (preferred)
- Minimum 5 years of forest management experience (U.S. South preferred)
- Excellent soft skills: communication, collaboration, time management, adaptability, and critical thinking
- Strong analytical and problem-solving skills
- Proficiency in interpreting and communicating model outcomes
Experience with:
- Linear programming and optimization
- Remsoft’s Woodstock Optimization Studio (preferred)
- R programming language (preferred)
- GIS concepts and forest information systems
- Relational databases
- Forest carbon markets (preferred)
- ESG disclosures or sustainability reports for corporate or investment audiences (preferred)
- Growth and yield equations and systems like FastLob, PMRC, FPS, and FVS (preferred)
- Willingness to travel (once a quarter at a minimum)
Office Location:
While this position is ideally based in Charlotte, NC, we are open to candidates located within commuting distance of any AFM office location.
