Responsibilities - What you’ll do
What you’ll do:
- Maintains state highway systems, specifically right of ways, shoulders and medians. Including mowing and trimming right of ways; treating noxious and invasive weeds; cutting and clearing brush; felling trees; cleaning up storm damage; flagging and directing traffic; setting up signs, cones, arrow boards, and other traffic control devices; loading, unloading, spreading, and hauling materials and supplies.
- Maintains, cleans, and repairs state highway right of ways and medians, including spraying weeds, clearing brush and debris, felling trees, repairing and replacing road signs and guardrails; cleaning curbs and gutters; painting buildings and equipment; and servicing equipment and machinery.
- Operates vehicles to transport employees, equipment, machinery and/or materials, or to warn oncoming traffic, plow snow and spread ice control materials; mows right of way using tractor mower and hand tools; operates auger, forestry machine, backhoe, forklift, and various trucks (e.g., dump, chemical applicator, bucket, utv, and platform).
- May help with inventorying, mixing, loading, and delivering pesticides.
- May assist with Monarch CCAA plantings and habitat restorations.
- Emergency storm clean up, in addition to snow removal, may be required.
- May assist other sheds with area tasks including training, brush removal, spraying, etc.
- Performs other responsibilities as required or assigned.

Minimum Qualifications
- High School Diploma or GED/HiSET
- Valid Driver's License
- A passing grade on the written portion of the commercial driver's license (CDL) exam is required prior to hire date. Must pass the driving portion of the CDL exam with tanker endorsement, no air brake restrictions (Class B), and interstate status (either Excepted Interstate [EI] or Non-Excepted Interstate [NI]) within 60 days after being hired into this position.
- Successful completion of a work simulation examination and a medical-physical examination.
- Herbicide, Conservation and Pesticide Experience
- Chainsaw and Other Small Outdoor Equipment
- Groundskeeping/ Management Skills
Special Working Conditions:
- Job requires significant physical stamina and endurance, including the ability to move materials by hand, operate hand tools, and perform stationary flagging.
- Job requires outdoor work that involves exposure to physical hazards, health and safety risks, and/or adverse or otherwise undesirable characteristics in the environment, including risk of physical injury from carrying out duties in heavy traffic areas, on or near heavy equipment or machinery, and with hazardous chemicals or materials.
- Job may require overtime and nighttime work.
- Job may require operation of vehicles to plow snow and spread ice control materials.
Preferred Qualifications:
- Basic operation of heavy equipment (tractors, skid steers, excavators)
- Commercial Pesticide Applicator License (Category 6 preferred)
- Proficient experience felling trees and cleaning up downfall and/or storm damage
- Mechanically inclined with small engines
- Basic understanding of maintenance mechanics of equipment and vehicles
- Agronomic, forestry, arboriculture, and/or conservation background (proficiency in plant identification a plus)
- Mowing and string trimmer use
- Basic grounds beautification
