NH Audubon is a nonprofit, statewide membership organization that operates three centers (in Auburn, Concord, and Hebron), and manages 40 wildlife sanctuaries. Our staff includes conservation biologists, educators, land managers, and other talented individuals with accounting, development, personnel, communications, building maintenance, management, and marketing skills.

Mission: To protect New Hampshire’s natural environment for wildlife and for people.

TITLE: School Programs Coordinator

LOCATION: Massabesic Center, Auburn, NH; McLane Center, Concord, NH; off-site locations for programs

HOURS: Monday-Friday, with some weekends required. Hours will typically occur between 8am and 5pm. Will vary based on programs schedule. Some evenings required.

SCHEDULE: 35 hours per week, full-time, non-exempt (hourly paid) staff position.  Schedule will vary according to seasonal needs. 40 hours a week during certain seasons and select summer camp weeks.

FUNCTION: This position will support the mission of New Hampshire Audubon: to protect New Hampshire’s natural environment for wildlife and for people, by providing leadership for the school programs focus area of the education department including school program coordination and outreach, environmental education teaching, other education program support, and impact reporting.

ESSENTIAL WORK TASKS:

School Program Coordination and Environmental Education

  • Develop, schedule, and deliver environmental education programs to school/youth groups, including but not limited to classroom visits, field trips off- and on-site, webinars, and guided hikes. Align with NGSS and NH Department of Education objectives.
  • Perform outreach and foster relationships with local schools, districts, institutions, and community groups to increase the scope and impact of NH Audubon school programming. Respond to program inquiries via phone, email, and in person. Communicate program expectations and follow-up with program participants and organizers.
  • Develop environmental education programmatic marketing strategies to be approved by the Director of Education and Communications Team. Coordinate implementation of plan.
  • Develop and maintain up-to-date lists of organizational and client contact information for marketing campaigns.
  • Collect individual participant contact information per standard NH Audubon practices to coordinate program impact with marketing and membership teams.
  • Generate and submit reports on program numbers, evaluation surveys, and write impact stories to highlight education program accomplishments.
  • Manage the overall school program schedule using Microsoft Outlook calendar and communicate schedule changes with NH Audubon staff.
  • Maintain and organize database of program records and curricula resources through Microsoft SharePoint.
  • Maintain organized supply closets and inventory of physical materials and artifacts. Make approved purchases within the assigned budget.
  • Manage program fee billing, accounting paperwork, and deposits via QuickBooks and Expensify.
  • Engage in systematic review and improvement of individual and team-wide performance.
  • Attend regular paid professional development sessions via webinars and in-person conferences.
  • Train and manage volunteers and staff assigned to school programs.
  • Explore developing or expanding programs for school programs outreach including career exploration, work experience, and additional longitudinal programming.
  • Attend regular staff meetings and check-ins.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.

 Other duties (Camp)

  • Assist in facilitating winter and spring break camps held at the Massabesic Center and/or McLane Center.
  • Assist Camp Programs Manager with camp staff training.
  • Offer support to Camp Programs Manager for development of lessons and activities for nature camps.
  • Provide on-call summer camp facilitation and/or staff supervisory and/or emergency response support, including but not limited to dedicated weeks for special camp partnership collaborations with other organizations.

Other duties (Animal and Public Programs)

  • Provide cleaning for all animal enclosures according to Center schedules and protocols when necessary to cover other staff schedules.
  • Assist Animal Programs Curator in delivering safe animal enrichment and animal behavior training routines using up-to-date knowledge from experts in the field of animal ambassador care.
  • Execute safe handling and care of traveling animal ambassadors, including development and implementation of transport protocols for off-site programs.
  • Coordinate with McLane Center staff to stay proficient in raptor handling and transport procedures.
  • Assist with documenting veterinary visits and routine on-site veterinary care for animal ambassadors, and activities on animal care when necessary.
  • Maintain animal exhibits to the highest standards for visitor education and enjoyment.
  • Assist with informal education events, including the bi-annual Pelagic Trip and guest speakers, community group events, etc.

LEADERSHIP: Reports to Director of Education

QUALIFICATIONS:

Education: Bachelor’s degree in Environment Science, Biology, Education, or a related degree preferred.

Experience:

  • Two to three years of experience with school programs, environmental education, and a demonstrated ability to make independent and coordinated decisions.
  • Experience with children in an educational setting required.
  • One to two years of animal care and training experience preferred.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication and organizational skills with the ability to work effectively within a diverse community.
  • Proficient telephone and administrative skills, and experience with MS Word, Excel, and database programs.
  • Experience with event registration software and reporting programs desirable.
  • Passion for environmental conservation and education required.

  • Must have First Aid certification and CPR certification or equivalent, or willingness to obtain certifications during the first 30 days of employment (provided by NH Audubon); Wilderness First Aid certification or equivalent desirable.

Physical Demands:

  • To perform the essential functions of the position, the applicant must be in a physical condition capable of standing, stretching, bending, walking, lifting, and transporting a maximum of 25 pounds.   
  • Must have a tolerance to spend time outdoors in variable weather conditions and in the presence of biting insects with the ability to hike over varied terrain for short distances.    
  • Must be able to climb stairs, be physically and mentally capable of leading groups of children and adults in an outdoor setting including moderate hiking.    
  • Must have a valid driver’s license.   

COMPENSATION:   

  • $21.00 – 23.00/hour, commensurate with experience.
