Seasonal Botanical Field Technician

Stillwater Sciences is seeking highly motivated and talented junior- to mid-level botanists to join our interdisciplinary staff for on-call positions this summer. We are looking for botanists interested in applying their knowledge of California flora to vegetation projects in Northern and Central California. Positions will be based out of our Berkeley or Davis office. Hourly rate $24–$32 depending on qualifications or experience. Submit application HERE
Responsibilities include plant identification, vegetation data collection, photographic monitoring, preparation and demobilization of field efforts, and data entry. Experience in wetland delineation and/or vegetation mapping/classification a plus. This is an on-call, temporary position. Field efforts are anticipated to be variable in length, potentially up to 50 hours per week starting in May and likely extending into August. Additional office-based work (i.e., reporting, data analysis) may be available for candidates with applicable experience.
The ideal applicant should have:
- Earned or be in the process of earning a BS or BA in Botany or similar degree.
- Excellent plant identification skills (Plant Taxonomy or equivalent course; sufficient knowledge of the local flora and familiarity with utilizing the Jepson eFlora and/or the printed Jepson Manual to identify fresh and collected specimens to species).
- Prior field experience.
- A team-oriented attitude with the ability to work collaboratively and independently, as needed.
- Willingness to travel and work in remote locations (lodging provided) for 7 – 10 days maximum.
- Competency to follow directions and field safety protocols.
- Attention to detail and commitment to sound science.
Qualifications:
- Solid navigational skills using maps and GPS.
- Ability to move equipment of 25 pounds or more.
- A valid driver’s license, good driving record, and ability to use personal vehicle to travel to certain field sites (reimbursable).
- Ability to traverse difficult terrain including steep slopes, muddy wetlands with standing water, and extremely dense brush.
- Endurance to work long days in all types of weather.
