Maine Audubon is hiring a Seasonal Environmental Educator to join its dynamic team based in Holden, ME (greater Bangor area). Since 1843, Maine Audubon has worked to conserve Maine wildlife and wildlife habitat by engaging people in education, conservation, and action.

The Fields Pond Audubon Center has hosted a nature center and store, school programs, nature tours, community science, interpretation, and other environmental education and community engagement programs in the greater Bangor area for more than 25 years.

Position Overview

This position will assist with the development and delivery of community and school-age environmental education programs, with a major emphasis on facilitating summer camp serving children in grades 1-5.

These programs are designed to instill fascination, understanding, and responsibility for the natural world and focus on natural history, sustainability, and human impacts. Candidates should have experience and strong skills with elementary-age students; group management; Maine’s natural history; program development and delivery. This position may also assist with other sanctuary projects as time allows.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

  • Teach quality pace-based environmental education programs for youth.
  • Assist with the implementation of nature camp programs and special events.
  • Model safe and responsible behavior during outdoor activities.
  • Create a safe and welcoming learning environment for all learners
  • Support program goals through excellent communication and creativity.
  • Collaborate with other Maine Audubon staff to achieve outreach and education goals.

Qualifications

  • Background and degree in education, outdoor education, nature programs, biology, or environmental studies
  • Confident leading programs in an outdoor space including outdoor classrooms, trails, and varied terrain
  • Knowledge of Maine’s natural history and ecology
  • Skilled with computer software applications and online meeting/teaching platforms
  • Have (or able to work towards) current First Aid and CPR certification
  • Enthusiastic and passionate about outdoor environmental education
  • Able to multi-task and manage a variety of responsibilities
  • Able to pass a criminal background check

Physical Requirements/ Working Conditions

  • Able to lift up to 50 pounds when setting up for programs or working on the property.
  • Able to move on all trails on Fields Pond property as part of programing and stewardship.
  • Able to use hands/fingers to operate computer and other program equipment.
  • Able to work outdoors in challenging environmental conditions.

Timing, Compensation, and Benefits

  • This is a full-time, seasonal (June/July/August), 40 hours per week position, Monday-Friday, 8:30 am-4 pm with occasional weekend or evening work for special events.
  • The ideal position term is June-August, but can accommodate some flexibility on start & end dates.
  • Seasonal extensions may be possible as projects, funding, and seasonal workloads develop.
  • Compensation: $18-$20/hour.
  • Mileage reimbursed when driving personal vehicle to offsite programs.
