Worksite: LLDRM Compound, Cass Lake
Work Hours: M-Th, 6:00am – 4:30pm, but may vary
LLBO Status: Non-exempt
Safety Sensitive: No
License/Certification Requirements: Valid MN Drivers License, current insurance or be insurable.

Summary: Responsible for assisting the DRM Plant Resources Director or Crew Leader with a multitude of projects throughout the field season, in which many of these projects deal with the control of invasive species found within the Leech Lake Reservation and Chippewa National Forest.

Education Requirements and Experience:
High School Diploma or General Education Diploma (G.E.D) with interest and experience in the control of non-native invasive species or other natural resource fields.
Currently perusing an A.S. or B.S. degree in Natural Resources Management, Biology, Forestry or equivalent studies preferred.
Knowledge of Leech Lake Reservation’s landscape, plant & wildlife communities, and geography a plus.

Additional Qualifications and Skills:

  • Attitude and aptitude for working within the field of Natural Resources is required.
  • Must be a team player, manage time, and work independently with minimal supervision.
  • Ability to be punctual, enthusiastic, possess positive leadership skills and work ethics is required.
  • Ability to follow written and verbal communications and follow a strict protocol is required.
  • Ability to read maps, a compass, GPS unit, and navigate within the forest is an absolute requirement.
  • Excellent interpersonal and communication skills are required for this position.
  • Cultural sensitivity and familiarity with Annishinaabe values, practices and beliefs.
  • Pre-employment drug testing is mandatory for all Leech Lake Band of Ojibwe positions.

Duties/Responsibilities:

  • Complete work and tasks in a timely manner as directed by the LLDRM Plants Program Managers or Crew Leader.
  • Follow strict protocol for field work to ensure goals are being achieved.
  • Travel to training workshops or partner events may be required.
  • Willingness to utilize new equipment and technology for invasive species control
  • Online webinars may be required.
  • Work under the direction of the Plants Program Director and/or crew leader to implement a variety of control methods for invasive species (mechanical control, bio-control release, etc.).
  • Assist in the implementation of habitat enhancement projects for plants and/or wildlife on the reservation.
  • Always maintain confidentiality and professional ethics.
  • Responsible for keeping work areas neat and orderly to maintain a safe working environment.
  • Responsible for practicing workplace safety within the field and office always.
  • Travel with crews on the reservation on a regular basis.
  • Understanding and sensitive to Native American culture.
  • Adhere to policies governing staff conduct.
  • All other related duties as assigned.

Physical Requirements:

  • Applicant must have the ability to complete arduous work in an outdoor setting; some of which can be challenging. Ability to lift up to 50lbs, utilizing safe lifting techniques is required.
  • Must be able to operate heavy machinery.
  • Aspects of this position require traversing uplands, lowlands, and wetlands to conduct fieldwork, the ability to hike uneven and often wet terrain for long periods of time is required.
  • Must have the ability to work in inclement weather conditions and endure insects such as mosquitoes, deer flies, ticks, and occasional encounters with stinging insects.
