Seasonal Shorebird Biologist

Description. We seek two enthusiastic and experienced avian field biologists to aid with monitoring and management of five focal shorebird/seabird species in the Florida Panhandle between February 15 and August 15, 2026 (exact start and end dates are somewhat flexible). Focal beach-nesting bird species include snowy plovers, Wilson’s plovers, American oystercatchers, least terns, and black skimmers. The seasonal biologists will be working with a team to: locate and monitor shorebird nests and broods, maintain protected nesting and brood-rearing habitats, and re-sight banded birds. Other duties may include disturbance observations, predator tracking surveys, data entry, utilizing wildlife cameras, working with volunteers, education and outreach, and documenting non-breeding shorebird and seabird species observed in the study area. The two positions will be in separate regions of the panhandle, with one east/central (Port St. Joe to Destin) and one west (Pensacola to Destin).
Duties.
• Locate and monitor shorebird nests and broods, including determining nests fates and overall productivity following a detailed protocol.
• Identify, post, flag, and maintain nesting and brood-rearing protected habitats. • Re-sight uniquely banded individuals regularly by spotting scope and tripod.
• Conduct disturbance observations, predator tracking surveys, and facilitate and maintain Reconyx wildlife cameras.
• Enter detailed and accurate data as needed into project databases.
• Engaging in public outreach efforts during major holidays and busy weekends.
• Communicate and maintain good working relationships with Florida Shorebird Alliance partners, such as the Florida Park Service and Audubon Florida.
Qualifications.
• Bachelor's degree in Biology, Natural Resources, Wildlife Biology, Zoology, or related field is required.
• Willingness to work irregular hours required to achieve work objectives.
• 2-3 years demonstrated experience with shorebird identification, surveying, and re-sighting banded shorebirds is required.
• Focus in avian research and conservation.
• Excellent verbal communication skills- must be comfortable working with the public to teach about beach-nesting birds.
• Proficient with digital camera, Garmin GPS, Basecamp & Google Earth, and Microsoft Office applications, to include Word, Excel and Access recommended.
• Valid driver's license is required; proficiency towing trailers and operating all-terrain vehicles is preferred.
• This position requires walking > 7 miles daily in soft sand while carrying field equipment.
• Willingness to work in variable conditions to include the cold, strong winds, rain, heat, and high humidity – biting insects will be prevalent throughout the season.
