The San Diego Natural History Museum (The Nat) was founded by amateur naturalists in 1874 and has played a major role in the conversation of our region. The Museum recently celebrated its 150th anniversary and completed a strategic plan focused on encouraging a love for nature, levering science and collections for conservation, and using our own voice to be here for nature.

Your Day-to-Day Work

The Sr. Director of People Operations will oversee all areas of the human resources function including benefits, retirement plan, talent recruitment and retention, performance management, employee relations & engagement, and professional development.  In addition, this role will identify and lead museum-wide initiatives related to employee engagement and organizational health. 

Primary Responsibilities

Human Resources

  • Ensure legal compliance with federal, state, and local requirements and maintain accurate records. Stay current with new and future guidelines and legislation and complete all required statutory compliance reports (e.g., CA Pay Data, EEO-1, OSHA). 
  • Coordinate all aspects of the employee lifecycle, including recruitment, onboarding, performance improvement, discipline, termination, offboarding, workers' compensation, leaves of absence, and employee relations. 
  • Serve as the go-to advisor for the senior leadership team in all areas of HR and people operations.
  • Liaise with employment attorney and risk management provider. Responsible for managing all employee related legal issues. 
  • Manage the People & Culture Coordinator who is responsible for recruiting, onboarding and general HR administrative duties.

Organizational Health and Culture

  • Develop initiatives that foster a strong organizational culture, including performance management, employee recognition and IDEA.
  • Oversee rollout of annual staff engagement survey and subsequent action plan. 
  • Co-coordinate planning and execution of staff retreats and events. 
  • Lead committees and process improvement efforts, as needed. 
  • Maintain and update employee handbook.
  • Ensure that the Museum workplace environment cultivates a sense of community, inclusiveness, safety and is always in line with our core organizational values. 

Benefits Administration

  • Administer the retirement plan through the payroll interface with all retirement plan partners. Responsible for daily plan management and assisting auditors.
  • Administer all employee benefits, interface with brokers, service providers and vendors, oversee annual and ongoing online enrollment process.  
  • Ensure accuracy of employee deductions in bi-monthly payroll. Maintain time-off balance schedule for payroll reporting.
  • Review and ensure accuracy of benefits expenses and invoices.
  • Serve as backup to the Controller for manual checks, as needed.

 What You Bring

  • 7+ years of demonstrated HR experience with strong knowledge of organizational development and HR management principles including labor relations, state & federal compliance requirements, and HR best practices. 
  • HRCI or SHRM certification.
  • Ability to handle sensitive and confidential information in a discrete and professional manner and maintain confidential information. 
  • Aptitude for working collaboratively across all departments and establishing productive, collegial relationships, both internally and externally.
  • Strategic, innovative, and hands-on approach to all aspects of HR and operations; adept at analysis, strategic planning, and change management. 
  • Excellent written and oral communication skills.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite especially Excel, and general project management programs.
  • Ability to multi-task while maintaining vigilant attention to detail.
  • Commitment to the Museum's mission while maintaining perspective, a professional demeanor, and a sense of humor.
  • A bachelor’s degree preferred.
  • Experience with ADP and Sage Intacct a plus.
  • Bilingual (Spanish) a plus.

This is a full-time, exempt position with benefits such as health insurance, vacation, 15 paid holidays, free admission into all of Balboa Park’s museums, and more.

Pay: Salary is $100,000 annually.
