Spring Creek Prairie Audubon Center seeks a part-time Senior Education Assistant to support our growing environmental education and public programs into the future.  The Senior Education Assistant will work directly with the Education Coordinator and Senior Education Manager to coordinate and facilitate public programs including outdoor field trips and summer camp programs. The Senior Education Assistant will help with implementing events and occasional offsite outreach programs and community science activities. The Senior Education Assistant will support daily center operations and visitor services, as well as work closely with the Education Coordinator to support volunteer engagement and activities.  The Senior Education Assistant will have strong educational and communication skills to effectively engage our program audiences and a demonstrated ability to effectively manage a variety of different projects.   

The Senior Education Assistant will report to the Senior Education Manager.  This position is a part-time position that will be scheduled to work 26 hours per week primarily in person at SCPAC, Tuesday through Friday. 

This position is on-site at Audubon Spring Creek Prairie Center, Denton, NE.

Compensation:

$17.00 - $19.00 / hour

Essential Functions

  • Provide engaging hands-on STEM activities to students during field trips, summer camps and other programs.
  • Assist the Education Coordinator in coordinating all aspects of field trips, summer camps and other programs including preparing supplies, materials, curriculum, flyers, and communication.
  • Work closely with the Education Coordinator and the Senior Education Manager to review and update program curriculum; assist with the review and management of evaluations of the field trips, day camp programs, and outreach events by teachers, partners, and the public.
  • Work closely with the Education Coordinator and the Senior Education Manager to prepare and lead public programs for audiences of all ages on and off site .
  • Assist the Education Coordinator with facilitation of community science projects, including volunteer training for projects, such as Monard Monitoring, Nest Watch, eBird, Christmas Bird Count, the Great Backyard Bird Count, and others; assist with data collection and entry in collaboration with the education team.
  • Support Visitor Center Operations through maintenance of buildings and grounds as necessary, delivering excellent customer service for the front desk, special events, and visitor services.
  • Promote equity, diversity, inclusion and belonging principles through all facets of Audubon’s work.
  • Other job-related duties as required.

Qualifications and Experience

  • High School Diploma or GED equivalent required (associate degree or a minimum of 2 years of college education preferred). An equivalent combination of education and experience will also be considered .
  • Minimum one year of demonstrated experience working with children and adults in an outdoor educational setting. Experience in education, environmental education, science, natural resources, communications, or related field, preferred.
  • Enjoys working with diverse audiences of all ages and abilities.
  • Excellent public speaking and written communication skills
  • Knowledge of local (Nebraska prairie) birds, plants, wildlife, and Nebraska natural and cultural history encouraged.
  • Must have a team-focused attitude, and the ability to consistently demonstrate a professional and friendly manner to program attendees, volunteers, public visitors, board members and other staff.
  • Hard working, flexible and self-motivated
  • Must have comfort working independently, as a leader and part of a team. Ability to follow instructions from colleagues, with little supervision.
  • Attention to detail, excellent time-management and organizational skills, sound judgement under pressure.
  • Must have access to a reliable vehicle and current valid driver’s license with ability to provide for own transportation to Spring Creek Prairie, and surrounding communities when necessary.
  • Ability to operate – or willingness to learn to operate – various types of equipment in a safe and efficient manner.
  • Ability to stand on your feet for long periods of time, lift up to 25 lbs., and traverse uneven terrain and trails in variable weather conditions with or without accommodation.
  • Bilingual in English/Spanish preferred.
  • Comfort working with digital tools such as Microsoft Suite, Google Suite, Zoom, Slack and social or other digital platforms.
  • Ability & willingness to work occasional evenings and weekends as needed.
