The Winnebago County Soil and Water Conservation District is seeking candidates for a permanent, full-time Soil Scientist/Urban Specialist (SS/US). This position is responsible for administering and managing the Districts soil boring program, as part of an agreement with the Winnebago County Health Department; and the construction site inspection program, as part of an agreement with the Illinois Environmental Protection Agency, as well as memorandums with other local governments. This position will also promote natural resource protection in urban areas; coordinate District educational informational and outreach programs; assist with other District programs such as tree and rain barrel sales; attend monthly board meetings and regional/state meetings as required. 

Candidates need to have the ability to communicate across all levels; relay technical information in an understandable format; be organized, self-motivated, innovative; willing to accept responsibility; able to work independently; and possess excellent oral and written communication skills. This position requires regular exertion due to conservation work, such as walking on rough terrain and climbing steep banks. Attendance at occasional evening or weekend activities may be required. A bachelor’s degree in agriculture, conservation or related field is required, with a strong emphasis in soil science. Obtaining certification as a Soil Classifier, as well as certification in construction site inspections, is a requirement of the position. The person must be proficient in Microsoft Office applications, as well as working knowledge or experience with GIS. Additional training will be offered, and it is a requirement for positions.
