Washington Trails Association is seeking a Southwest Regional Trails Coordinator who loves working with people and shares our commitment to trail stewardship and volunteerism. The Coordinator supports the Southwest Regional Manager in coordinating trail projects, recruiting and training volunteers and developing partnerships with land managers and other collaborative efforts with non-government partners. This position also leads adult and youth volunteer trail work events in the region including multi-day backcountry trips. Work sites include trails managed by the US Forest Service, Washington State Parks, and other city, state and county land management agencies in the area. This is a year-round, full-time, non-exempt position based in our office in Vancouver, WA, that reports to the Southwest Regional Manager.

Washington Trails Association preserves, enhances, and promotes hiking opportunities in Washington state. WTA is committed to making trails accessible to everyone in Washington and protecting our state’s wild places for the next generation. WTA has built the largest statewide volunteer trail maintenance program in the nation using a proven formula of "be safe, have fun and get some work done." WTA leads more than 150,000 hours of volunteer service annually to maintain, repair and build trails across the state; one-quarter of volunteers are youth 18 and under.

Responsibilities include, but are not limited to:

Project Coordination and Planning

  • Coordinate work party projects and plans with Southwest Regional Manager, Agency and Non-Government Partners
  • Assist Southwest Regional Manager in identifying appropriate volunteer trail projects
  • Develop plans and structure specifications for new trail construction, reconstruction, realignment and trail reroute projects in collaboration with project partners
  • Execute an annual project schedule to meet program goals and objectives Leading and Training volunteer work parties for WTA
  • Arrive at each work party with tools, refreshments and work plan
  • Establish a safe, fun and inclusive working environment for a crew of volunteers of diverse ages and backgrounds
  • Train, motivate and lead volunteers to complete a variety of trail projects including annual maintenance, repairs and new construction
  • Ensure all technical work is to standards, including tread construction, drainage structures, and construction of steps, turnpike and puncheon
  • Calmly manage emergency situations following WTA’s emergency response protocols
  • Positively represent WTA mission, programs and membership in all interactions with volunteers, trail users and others

Documenting work parties

  • Ensure safety talk is delivered to volunteers and documented
  • Maintain and submit Sign-in and Liability Release for volunteers in a timely manner
  • Prepare and submit summary report and thank you email to volunteers for each work party in a timely manner
  • Report all incidents affecting the safety, health, and well-being of volunteers in a timely manner
  • Provide digital photo documentation of project progress and volunteer engagement
  • Identify and share with communications team potential volunteer or regional trail stories that highlight WTA’s mission and work in the area.

Community Engagement

  • Assist efforts to engage local schools and youth groups in volunteer trail stewardship
  • Cultivate new partnerships with organizations that serve under-represented populations to engage them in WTA’s trail maintenance programs
  • Represent WTA at community events in Southwest WA and Portland, OR
  • Coordinate community engagement efforts with the Southwest Regional Manager and
    communications/outreach staff
  • Promote Diversity, Equity and Inclusion by assisting in trainings and workshops and identifying opportunities to further this work through community involvement


The work schedule will be variable but the typical schedule is 30-40 hours a week over 4 or 5 days including 2-3 trail work parties per week. As a general rule, work parties will occur between Thursday and Sunday; work party-related communication, office work and outreach events, as well as documentation of activities may occur outside of these days. Wednesdays will typically be scheduled at WTA’s Vancouver, WA, office.

Job skills, experience and personal traits preferred:

  • Demonstrated experience leading volunteers in an outdoor setting
  • Demonstrated skills in trail maintenance and building
  • Organizational skills, attention to detail, and technology skills to provide program and administrative support. Proficiency with Microsoft Office and email communication. Familiarity with database usage is a plus.
  • Strong interpersonal skills to ensure a fun, safe and quality volunteer experience
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills - ability to communicate across multiple channels to internal departments and external partners
  • Cultural competency experience and demonstrated ability to work with people of diverse races, ages, genders, abilities and economic backgrounds
  • Ability to work independently and contribute to a team effort
  • Ability to remain calm and manage emergency situations
  • Ability to work in an outdoor environment, including hiking and backpacking at least 6 miles daily in a variety of terrain, and follow minimum impact guidelines
  • Demonstrated flexibility in a dynamic and fast-paced environment, feeling comfortable with mid-course corrections
  • Current WFA or WFR certification and CPR certification
  • Valid driver’s license and ability to drive a truck on highways and dirt roads
  • Reliable vehicle for travel including dirt roads (WTA provides mileage reimbursement)
  • Ability to work weekends and 10-hour days
  • A strong commitment to WTA’s mission

Compensation starts at $19.50 per hour. Benefits include medical, dental, vision and long-term disability insurance; retirement plan; and holiday, vacation and sick leave.
