The Organization:

Hunterdon Land Trust is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization with the mission of fostering healthy ecosystems and communities in the Hunterdon County region through permanent preservation of open space and farmland, stewardship of natural resources, and cultivation of the Dvoor Farm as a center for inspiration, education, and connection.

Position Description:

The Stewardship Coordinator cares for preserved lands through annual monitoring, maintaining public access at HLT’s 8 preserves, managing stewardship initiatives, coordinating volunteers, and hosting programs. The ideal candidate will enjoy working both in our office in Flemington, NJ, and in the field visiting properties throughout the Hunterdon County region.

Responsibilities:

Conservation Land Monitoring

  • Monitor easements and fee-owned properties annually.
  • Communicate and build relationships with landowners; interpret and enforce conservation easements.
  • Complete baseline reports of conditions on properties and easements targeted for preservation.

Preserve Management

  • Update management plans for HLT’s preserves by assessing conservation values and stewardship priorities.
  • Implement stewardship initiatives in management plans, including invasive species control, native tree plantings, erosion control, deer management, and trail upkeep in accordance with the budget; coordinate with contractors.
  • Create and maintain marked trails, signs, kiosks, and other infrastructure on HLT’s preserves.
  • Create and update trail map guides as needed.
  • Recruit and coordinate volunteers to support stewardship efforts, including managing HLT’s hunting program.
  • Coordinate with Facilities Manager to complete repairs and maintenance tasks at Dvoor Farm, engaging with contractors as needed.

Administration and Technology

  • Manage HLT’s GIS database and create maps to support land preservation and stewardship efforts.
  • Ensure compliance with Land Trust Alliance Standards and Practices for stewardship.
  • Manage Land Acquisition and Stewardship Committee in conjunction with the Senior Director of Land Acquisition and Stewardship.
  • Participate in grant writing and reporting in conjunction with HLT staff.
  • Manage regular data backups and assist with other technological needs.

Outreach/Public Engagement

  • Engage with the public at HLT preserves through volunteer events, guided hikes, and other interpretive programs.
  • Lead educational programs that further HLT’s mission.
  • Contribute content for use in social media, newsletter, and other communications.

Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s degree in ecology, natural resource management, environmental science, or related field, or equivalent experience.
  • Proficiency in ArcGIS Pro and Microsoft Office software.
  • New Jersey pesticide applicator license (or willingness to obtain upon hiring).
  • Capability to work both outdoors and in an office setting independently.
  • Ability to use hand tools and other powered equipment; experience with chainsaws, mowers, and tractors a plus.
  • Familiarity with native and invasive plant species, as well as invasive plant management strategies.
  • Strong oral and written communication skills.
  • Ability to manage multiple projects and priorities effectively; strong organizational skills.

Essential Duties include lifting and carrying heavy equipment (minimum 50 lbs. for 100 yards) and stewardship materials over rough terrain and steep slopes in all kinds of weather conditions. Must hold a valid driver's license and have personal vehicle available for work-related travel (mileage will be reimbursed). The position includes occasional evening and weekend work.
