We are hiring 7-10 motivated individuals for the Stream Restoration Crew at Philmont Scout Ranch!

The Stream Restoration Crew is responsible for implementing stream and wetland restoration activities at Philmont Scout Ranch, located in the beautiful Sangre de Cristo Mountains of Colfax County, New Mexico. Philmont is Scouting America’s premier High Adventure Base, where groups of scouts ages 14 – 18 undertake backpacking treks that last between 7 – 12 days.

Crew Member Expectations

Stream Restoration Staff are members of a 7 – 10-person crew led by a Stream Restoration Crew Foreman (field leader) and a Stream Restoration Coordinator (project manager). Crew members will be tasked with implementing stream and wetland restoration activities. Crew members will be responsible for a range of duties including but not limited to: educating groups of scouts about wetlands, leading them in the construction of  beaver dam analogs (BDAs), planting native vegetation, and preparing materials for each days’ program. During June and July, the crew will work for 3-6 hours each morning with groups of 20-40 scout volunteer and then spend the rest of the day working as a crew to prepare for the next days’ program. From August-November the crew will work mostly independently on restorative measures, with occasional volunteer groups.

The project is being completed as part of a State of New Mexico River Stewardship Program watershed improvement grant and so crew members will also assist in collecting data for state monitoring efforts. This will include deploying water quality monitoring devices, collecting samples for laboratory analysis, and assisting with other monitoring activities such as stream cross sections and drone flights.

Desired Experience & Qualifications

The ideal candidates will have a can-do attitude and a willingness to learn. Experience with stream restoration activities or other related activities, including trail work, forestry work, etc. is also desired. Candidates with experience in chainsaw or water-quality data collection will receive additional consideration.

Dates of Employment & Housing

May 25th - November 13, 2025

Housing will consist of a 10 x 12’ canvas wall tent during summer and bunkhouse style housing during fall. All food is provided.

Philmont Standards

Crew members hired for this project will be considered Philmont Scout Ranch staff and must adhere to the Ranch’s requirements for employment.

  • Must be at least 18 years of age by start of employment
  • Must complete a work physical from a licensed physical prior to to arrival
  • Wear Philmont work uniform while on duty (voucher provided for the purchase of work pants and shirt)
  • Must participate in designated staff training (May 25 – June 4th, with additional trainings such as chainsaw certification available to interested individuals later in the season)
  • Must adhere to the policies and standards set forth by Philmont Scout Ranch management
