Position Summary

Join the International Crane Foundation (ICF) as a Veterinary Technician and be part of a passionate team working to save endangered cranes around the world. In this dynamic role, you'll directly support the mission of ICF by providing essential animal health care, working closely with the Director of Conservation Medicine to assist in examinations, treatments, and procedures. Your work will contribute to global conservation efforts through hands-on involvement in species reintroduction, veterinary research, and preventative medicine.

This is a full-time (32-40 hours) opportunity with a pay range of $22.00- $24.00 per hour.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

As a Veterinary Technician at ICF, you'll prepare clinical spaces, monitor anesthesia, and assist with diagnostic procedures on all crane species. You'll perform venipuncture, administer medications, and manage wound care, while coordinating with aviculture staff to ensure consistent, high-quality health monitoring. Your role also includes maintaining lab facilities, conducting in-house diagnostics, and handling external lab submissions. Accurate recordkeeping is essential, and you'll input vital health and husbandry data into the ZIMS database while maintaining detailed documentation of our genetic and serum biobank, controlled drugs, and safety protocols.

In this role, you will support a wide range of critical functions that go beyond daily clinical care. You will assist in developing and implementing disease control protocols and play a central role in coordinating the annual health check of the captive crane flock. Ensuring the Chick Isolation Facility is always prepared for exams and procedures is part of your ongoing responsibilities. You'll oversee patient transport to the UW-School of Veterinary Medicine and may assist in procedures alongside veterinary professionals.

Maintaining clean, well-stocked veterinary spaces and managing medical and food inventory are essential components of this position. You will contribute to the foundation's research and outreach by supporting the development of scientific publications and presentations. This role also includes mentoring and training students, residents, and international staff, both on-site and virtually.

Required Qualifications

This position requires a minimum of an associate degree from an accredited veterinary technology program, successful completion of the Veterinary Technician National Examination, and a Wisconsin State Veterinary Technician License (or eligibility to obtain within six months). A minimum of two years' experience with non-domestic animals and inventory management is essential. It's preferred that you have experience working with captive birds, knowledge of ZIMS or related software and at least two years' experience in a zoo or captive wildlife institution.
