Serve as an AmeriCorps Individual Placement for Washington Service Corps’ (WSC) Environmental Stewardship Program at King Conservation District (KCD)! Support KCD’s high school education programs by leading & organizing recruitment & planning for the Washington State Regional Envirothon Competition. Provide meaningful opportunities for communities to get involved in KCD programs through supporting education & outreach activities.

King Conservation District provides conservation education opportunities that promote & support the voluntary stewardship of natural resources on King County private lands through increased knowledge & understanding of natural resource conservation topics & natural resource management practices. District education programs are developed based on local community needs & interests, & include classes, webinars, workshops, tours, & other field-based learning opportunities.

The Conservation Education Specialist will connect King County community members to natural resource stewardship opportunities by connecting them to education & technical assistance offered by King Conservation District. This position will support & facilitate educational events on the topics of freshwater & marine shorelines, healthy farms, forests, soils, & water. Educational events include in-person trainings for community members, webinars, videos, K-12 field trainings, & the NW Regional Envirothon competition, including team trainings for high school students. 

The ideal candidate for this position is well-organized, self-motivated, & committed to providing quality educational opportunities for adults & youth of all backgrounds, including historically underrepresented communities. They should possess strong written & verbal communication skills (including public speaking), have experience or interest in event planning & coordination, & have experience or basic understanding of environmental stewardship & educational programming. We are seeking an individual who easily & meaningfully engages others, embraces diversity & equity, & collaborates across teams of staff, partners, & volunteers to achieve goals & objectives. This is an AmeriCorps national service position & will entail service requirements from Washington Service Corps, such as completing a minimum number of service hours & completing their WSC term of service to the specified end date.

ESSENTIAL JOB DUTIES

The following list of duties is intended as an illustration of the various types of work performed.  The omission of specific duties does not exclude them from the responsibilities of the position if the work is similar, related or a logical assignment to the position.

  • Envirothon (50%)
    • Recruit high school students to participate in the Envirothon Competition.
    • Plan, coordinate, & facilitate student trainings on forestry, soils, aquatics, & wildlife to help prepare them for the event.
    • Recruit volunteers to write exams, deliver trainings, & help at the NW Regional Envirothon Competition.
    • Serve as a member of the NW Envirothon Planning Committee & lead planning meetings.
    • Act as point person for NW Regional Envirothon day of the event.
    • Assist with the State Envirothon Competition.

  • KCD Education Program (35%)
    • Participate as an active member of the KCD Education Program, working as a team to develop educational programming, and attending weekly staff meetings, trainings, & various events.
    • Support KCD Educational Programs focused on forestry, shorelines, & farming.
    • Help facilitate educational events, such as tours, workshops, webinars, & more.
    • Build outreach & instructional materials to support education events & projects.
    • Utilize social media, direct outreach, & online postings, to develop exciting & creative marketing materials to recruit for education programs & projects.
    • Film, edit, & develop educational videos/webinars.
  • AmeriCorps Program (15% FTE)
    • Complete national service program requirements including community service projects based around National Days of Service.
    • Provide environmental education & training to participants across the NW Region.
    • Complete required member trainings focused on cultural awareness, effective communication, leadership, & more!
    • Complete quarterly stories of service.
    • Correspond regularly with site staff & WSC Coordinator.

DESIRED QUALIFICATIONS, KNOWLEDGE, & ABILITIES

  • Experience &/or education in a related field, such as: environmental education, restoration, stewardship, etc.
  • Strong commitment and interest in equity, inclusion, and justice.
  • Applicants should be organized with strong written & oral communication skills.
  • Experience or interest in planning & facilitating events.
  • Creative, collaborative, & self-motivated.
  • Outreach &/or social media experience a plus.
  • Valid Washington State Driver’s License
  • Able to work outside in all weather conditions, navigate on unstable terrain, & lift up to 10 lbs.

LOCATION

Based out of King Conservation District office (800 SW 39th St, Suite 150, Renton, WA 98057).

Travel to various locations through King County & occasionally throughout the state.

SALARY & BENEFITS

Monthly living allowance of $3,561.90, or ($37,400/10.5 months). This position comes with basic health insurance coverage. Service Members will receive AmeriCorps Education Award of $7,395 at the end of a successful term.

SCHEDULE

KCD currently supports a hybrid work environment with 2 days required in office each week. This position is full-time, with a flexible schedule around program needs. Some weekday evening & weekend days are required each month for events. We allow for flexible schedule to accommodate for occasional evening & weekend work (e.g., If we host a Saturday event, you may opt for a Tuesday – Saturday work week & Sunday/Monday weekend).
