Whitefish Legacy Partners (WLP) is a non-profit organization whose community-minded vision is to ensure conservation, recreation, and education on the lands around Whitefish for future generations. We work to leave a lasting legacy for our community that will include a 55-mile natural surface loop trail around Whitefish Lake (Whitefish Trail) and permanent conservation and community stewardship of lands for water quality, wildlife, and recreation access. The Whitefish Trail is currently 49 miles of non-motorized trail and provides permanent, close-to-town access for hiking, biking, and year-round outdoor enjoyment.

Position

Reporting to, and in partnership with the Trail Coordinator (TC), the Whitefish Trail Stewardship Intern (WTSI) will carry out trail maintenance projects with the TC, independently, and with community volunteers. Projects will include creating retaining walls, improving water drainage, improving berms, brushing trail corridor, replacing signposts, and many more. The WTSI must be able to work independently, perform required work, and certain candidates may also supervise volunteers. This internship is a great fit for people who are interested in pursuing a career in outdoor recreation, conservation, or natural resource management.

Responsibilities

  • Perform trail maintenance tasks with the TC and independently including clearing downed trees, brushing corridor, tread repair/improvement, and drainage work
  • Perform trailhead maintenance tasks
  • Assist and lead trail volunteer crews on stewardship days
  • Act as an ambassador on the trail educating and assisting trail users
  • Assist WLP staff with event tasks as needed

Qualifications

  • Self-motivated; able to multi-task with excellent attention of detail
  • Ability to work safely with minimal supervision after training
  • Previous trails experience is preferred but not required
  • Certifications (USFS Chainsaw, Wilderness First Responder/Aid) are a plus
  • Valid driver’s license and clean driving record
  • Access to personal vehicle preferred
  • Must be able perform strenuous physical work, lift 50 pounds, and be comfortable hiking with tools and heavy loads

Expectations

  • Part-time seasonal position @ ~30 hours/week mid-June through mid-August (9-12 weeks) at $20-$23/hour depending on experience.
