Position Summary
VCE seeks to hire a seasonal technician to conduct field work throughout Vermont. This is a 16-17-week position that is expected to run from late April through August. There is some flexibility on start/end dates for this position.
This position will take the lead on assessing the wild bee community on pollen limited crops. The seasonal technician will conduct pollard walks for bees on apple, blueberry, pastures, squash and soy fields, as well as deploy and collect passive forms of bee collection. This field work will be conducted during peak flowering (May through August) and will help identify the wild bee communities on farms with different management regimes. Farms are located in both the Upper Vallet and Champlain Valley of Vermont. Our seasonal technician will be responsible for coordinating with farmers and planning their work schedule.
The successful applicant will use their application to demonstrate their experience conducting independent field work, insect identification skills and express their interest in working for VCE.
Responsibilities
- Report to the project P.I. and assist with field logistics and planning
- Lead both passive and active surveying of wild bees on farms
- Work independently as well as occasionally lead interns in fieldwork
- Collect and manage insect samples
- Collect, manage and enter data in an organized manner
- Coordinate with land owners prior to surveys
Minimum Qualifications
- Experience conducting independent fieldwork in a variety of conditions
- Familiarity with iNaturalist
- Experience with Pollard walks or other survey techniques
- Experience with insect identification
- Valid Driver’s License and vehicle
Preferred Qualifications
- Bee identification
- Experience leading field crew members
Compensation
The hourly rate for this position is $19-20 per hour plus reimbursement for work-related travel at the current federal mileage rate. The seasonal technician is expected to work 40 hours per week.
