Position Summary:

The Applied Fire and Landscape Ecology Lab at the University of Montana is seeking two field technicians to assist with wildland fuels field sampling and research during the summer of 2024. The field season will begin with a couple weeks in Yosemite National Park and the remainder of the term takes place in the Eastern Cascades of central Washington. Work will take place in the backcountry off unmaintained roads and be completed during a ‘hitch’ that consists of a minimum of 8-days. Technicians will be expected to camp with the crew while on hitch.

Specific duties include (but are not limited to):

  • Collecting precise GPS coordinates of plot locations
  • Collecting LiDAR scans with a terrestrial laser scanner (TLS)
  • Destructively harvesting biomass samples, measuring duff and litter, tallying hourly fuels
  • Identifying shrub and tree species and collecting tree measurements
  • Data entry and QA/QC

Minimum Qualifications:

  • Will have completed 2 years of coursework toward obtaining or have already obtained a bachelor’s degree in forestry, biology, environmental science, natural resources, or a similar field
  • Experience with plant identification
  • Previous field sampling experience

Desired Qualifications:

  • A BA or BS in forestry, biology, environmental science, natural resources, or a similar field
  • Experience with data entry and management
  • Previous vegetation, forestry, fuels, prescribed or wildland fire experience
  • Experience driving on unmaintained roads
  • Experience camping in the backcountry
  • Willingness to work long hours in harsh environments and inclement weather
  • Wilderness First Aid/CPR training
