AmeriCorps Cape Cod is a full-time residential service program dedicated to addressing the critical environmental and disaster preparedness and response needs on Cape Cod.  The Year 26 Term of Service runs from September 3, 2024, through July 24, 2025. 

AmeriCorps Cape Cod members enrolled in our program will: 

  • Conduct meaningful service activities that benefit the Cape Cod community. 
  • Receive experience in various sectors of the environmental and disaster preparedness fields. 
  • Gain valuable skills through training and hands-on service experience. 
  • Foster professional development through networking with local experts and gaining credentials through certificate-based trainings. 
  • Build leadership skills as a team member and as an individual. 

Compensation and Benefits: 

AmeriCorps Cape Cod members receive a living allowance of $14,000 during the 11-month term of service. Other benefits include program provided housing during the term of service, option for healthcare benefits, valuable trainings with certificates of completion, and a Segal AmeriCorps Education Award of $7,395 from the National Service Trust upon successful and satisfactory completion of the program.  

To be eligible for a Segal AmeriCorps Education Award, members must satisfactorily complete a minimum of 1,700 hours (approximately 40 hours per week) of service within the program time frame.  

Your Term of Service may be extended by the program for the following reasons:  

  • Your service is suspended due to compelling personal circumstances. 
  • Your service is terminated but a grievance procedure has resulted in reinstatement. 

AmeriCorps Cape Cod members are not Barnstable County employees. Members receive a bi-weekly stipend contingent on awarded grant funds. 

AmeriCorps Cape Cod members are expected to follow all Program Guidelines and Operating Procedures outlined in the Member Handbook and Contract summarized below: 

Service: 

AmeriCorps Cape Cod members are expected to provide quality community service in the areas of natural resource management, disaster preparedness and response, environmental education, and volunteer engagement to Barnstable County departments and towns, state and federal departments, and non-profit entities on Cape Cod.  

Community Strengthening: 

AmeriCorps Cape Cod members are expected to build and strengthen the program and Cape Cod through leadership, initiative, motivation, and teamwork and serve as a role model for others.  

Residential: 

AmeriCorps Cape Cod members are required to live in an assigned program residence. Housing is an exclusive benefit to members enrolled in the program. Pets are prohibited in the residence. Smoking (including cigarettes, e-cigarettes, chewing tobacco), alcohol use, and the use of recreational and illegal drugs are prohibited in the residence and on the property.  

Essential Functions of the Position: 

  • Can endure extensive physical activity while conducting fieldwork, including walking and climbing with equipment through difficult terrain. Group service activities include the use of hand and/or power tools. Training provided. 
  • Ability to lift at least 50 pounds. 
  • Ability to bend, stoop, pull, twist, and kneel. 
  • Ability to perform demanding physical labor in all weather conditions (cold/hot/wet/dry/humid/snow/rain). 
  • Ability to drive in difficult weather conditions. 
  • Ability to aid during disaster response efforts, including weekend hours. 
  • Willingness to live in a residential setting and foster a positive environment with housemates. Room occupancy ranges from 2-4 people depending on the program residence. 
  • Demonstrated commitment to community service and/or environmental service.  
  • Demonstrated ability to work well in a team setting as well as independently. 
  • Willingness to deploy nationally in the event of a disaster with short notice. 

Mandatory Qualifications of Applicants: 

  • Must meet federal AmeriCorps eligibility requirements including clearance on all required National Service Criminal History Checks (National Sex Offender Public Website, State Criminal History Check, and FBI). 
  • Must be 18 years or older. 
  • Must be a United States citizen or a legal permanent resident. 
  • Must have a GED or High School diploma.  
  • Must be able to provide your own reliable motor vehicle and valid driver’s license. 
  • Must pass a fit for duty physical exam before term of service begins. 
  • Must reside in an assigned program residence throughout the term of service. 

Additional Preferred Qualifications: 

  • Some college or volunteering experience is preferred.  
  • Skills and knowledge related to environmental studies, biology, or other sciences. 
  • Experience working with children and young adults. 
  • Experience overseeing volunteers and/or groups of people. 
  • Experience responding to natural disasters. 
  • Experience working outdoors and with power tools. 
  • Knowledge and ability to use Microsoft Office Suite.

Next Steps
Applications will be accepted until 20 positions are filled. Interviews will be offered on a rolling basis to qualified applicants who have submitted required application materials.
