Interested in learning more about becoming a sustainability professional? Do you enjoy racing? Want to learn more about how to make an event Zero Waste? The Cloud City Conservation Center and the Leadville Race Series are partnering to offer a new Zero Waste Summer Internship program for the summer of 2025. This experiential learning internship provides pathways to leadership and paid work experience for youth. Interns gain new skills in environmental sustainability while providing education and outreach in the local community. Interns will gain hands-on outreach skills in fostering sustainable behaviors while also gaining valuable experience learning how mountain communities, governments, and businesses are taking action and monitoring their environmental impacts. The program places a strong emphasis on "Zero Waste," recycling, and composting, playing a key role in Cloud City Conservation Center’s Waste Diversion Program and supporting the Leadville Race Series in achieving their waste diversion goals. Interns provide support for C4 staff during all summer Zero Waste Events (all Leadville Race Series weekends and Boom Days). Interns provide support for managing the waste stream at events and zero waste education and outreach for the community.
1. Responsibilities:
a. Commit to working 8 hours a day on race weekends (listed below).
b. Work at waste stations to ensure proper sorting and to prevent contamination. c. Work with vendors to ensure compliance with Zero Waste Requirements.
d. Provide education and outreach to community members about recycling, compost, and the importance of waste diversion and sustainability.
e. Turn compost at Cloud City Farm.
f. Take part in 1-2 field trips throughout the summer in combination with the C4 farm internship program to learn about local ecology, climate, agricultural food systems, waste diversion, energy, conservation, career pathways, and more.
g. Learn from sustainability professionals and race event directors to build skills and develop your resume.
2. Job Requirements:
a. Interns must meet the age requirement of 16-23 years old.
b. Desire to educate others on sustainability initiatives while expanding personal knowledge of current sustainability trends.
c. Enthusiasm for working hands-on with environmental sustainability efforts including handling compost, waste, and recyclables.
d. Comfort with interacting publicly with a variety of people in various settings.
e. Positive, self-motivated, organized, creative, and professional individual who can work independently and as part of a team.
f. Work flexible hours, including evenings and weekends, and at times over 8 hours in a day.
g. Ability to work outdoors in all weather conditions, and lift up to 50 pounds.
h. A valid driver’s license and transportation
3. Work Environment: This position is based out of Cloud City Conservation Center in Leadville, Colorado. Zero waste race events are primarily outdoors in a variety of weather conditions. Project work is typically done indoors in an open office environment.
4. Duration of Position (Dates): Interns must be able to commit to working Friday/Saturday/Sunday of each race weekend. Additional/optional hours (~5 hrs/weekly) can be added during the week.
a. Leadville Trail Marathon: June 27- 28, 2025
b. Silver Rush 50 Run and MTB: July 11–13, 2025
c. Leadville Stage Race: July 25-27, 2025
d. Boom Days: August 1-3, 2025
e. Leadville Trail 100 MTB + 10k: August 7-10, 2025
f. Leadville Trail 100 Run: August 15–17, 2025
Details Position starts the week of June 23, 2025 and ends August 17th 2025. Interns will commit to working 4-5 hours during the week and 8 hour days during event weekends. There are 18 days of event weekends and 10 weeks of the internship in total. Interns are paid $18 an hour.
