Great Old Broads for Wilderness is the only national environmental organization for older women. With a 40-year history of protecting the lands and waters we share, Great Old Broads for Wilderness has achieved major wins for public lands on the local, state, and national levels.

Great Old Broads for Wilderness is now searching for a part-time Grassroots Leadership Program Coordinator to engage and support local leaders. This is a remote position.

Responsibilities 

Engage and equip grassroots leaders 

  • Serve as the direct contact for seven chapters located in the Pacific Northwest and on the East Coast (GRITS in Georgia, Nor’easter Broads in New England, Cascade Volcanoes in Portland, Central Oregon Bitterbrush in Bend, Willamette Valley in Corvallis, Polly Dyer in Seattle, and Salish Sea in NW Washington) as well as the Former Land Agency Affiliate Group.
  • Reach out to chapter leaders by conducting regular 1:1 coaching/mentoring calls, speaking with each chapter at least 1 time per month.
    • Encourage leaders and support them according to their individual needs.
    • Ask open-ended questions, support brainstorming ideas, offer advice when given permission.
    • Send follow-up emails with necessary materials and support.
    • Track progress, support campaigns, etc.
    • Set up support materials as needed.
  • Ensure activity reports are completed.
    • Support chapter leaders in completing reports.
    • Complete reports proactively when information is received by email or calls.
  • Manage financial and administrative requests.
    • Process requests for reimbursement and for payment of expenses using an approved process.
    • Maintain awareness of the funds available for each chapter.
  • Administer email and data platforms to ensure chapters have the ability to communicate and to access information.
  • Respond to chapter leaders.
    • Respond to all emails from chapter leaders within 3 business days (example: received on Monday 1 January, respond by Thursday 4 January).
    • Read all chapter leaders’ activity reports and respond as needed within 10 business days (example: received on Monday 1 January, read and respond by Tuesday 16 January).
  • Demonstrate professional courtesy and represent organizational values.
    • Resolve conflicts between members in a way that supports long-term well-being and serves the organization’s values.
    • Interact with leaders and with all members in a way that reflects the organization’s values.
  • Support grants as needed.
    • Suggest deliverables and review proposals for the region.
    • Ensure deliverables for the region are completed.

Retain and grow chapters and members in the region

  • Ensure chapter and membership numbers do not fall.
  • Support chapter leaders to recruit and develop new co-leaders.
  • Develop 1-2 new chapters per year in designated areas.

Support grassroots trainings

  • Support grassroots trainings by providing ideas, reviewing content, and supporting facilitation.

Support communications

  • Provide information about activities in the region to communications team as needed.
  • Write blog posts, emails, and other materials as needed.

Provide remote support for leaders’ in-person events

  • Support 1-5 regional events per year by completing administrative tasks such as creating the event registration form, securing payment for the event, assisting with budgeting, and scheduling and facilitating the Zoom pre-trip webinar a month before the event.
  • Support national events as needed by completing administrative tasks and liaising with chapters if the event is in the region.
  • Support local events as needed by providing guidance and support on successful events.

Support regional advocacy

  • Participate in partner coalition calls for the region.
  • Participate in calls of committees/groups for the region.
  • Sign on to regional sign-on statements according to established process.
  • Respond to emergent advocacy needs in the region according to established process.

Support administration

  • Participate in staff meetings.
  • Make member renewal calls.
  • Participate in annual and strategic planning.

Other duties as assigned

Travel

  • The coordinator may travel up to 10 days per year, depending on needs.

Location and hours

The coordinator will work remotely. The schedule is flexible within the following limits:

  • A minimum of four working days per week, Monday through Friday, is required.
  • At least 3 hours per work day must be within the window of 9:00 to 12:00 Pacific US time.

Pay

The coordinator will work an average of 20 hours per week, with occasional weeks of slightly more or fewer hours, depending on needs. The pay rate is $30 per hour, paid monthly. There are no benefits for the role.

Essential qualifications

  • 2-3 years in a paid community organizing role (not a volunteer role)
  • Demonstrated ability to achieve results (such as network growth, increased engagement, or policy wins) as an organizer
  • Fluency in English, with impeccable written and oral skills

  • Native fluency in Spanish
  • Organizing in a remote work environment
  • Organizing on a regional or national scale
  • Organizing around environmental issues
