The San Francisco Public Utilities Commission is responsible for the management of 65,000 acres of watershed lands and 210-miles of rights-of-way. Located in three counties, these lands contain the water supply storage, transmission, and treatment systems which serve 2.7 million people. The Natural Resources and Lands Management Division provides direction for watershed protection, planning, research, operations, and training.
The SFPUC Peninsula Watershed - 23,000 acres of diverse and unique habitats ranging from oak woodlands and coniferous forests to serpentine grasslands is carefully managed to protect the quality of the water in the reservoirs and an abundance of native plant and animal life, including many rare, threatened or endangered species.
The Integrated Pest Management team is currently seeking an intern to participate in habitat restoration projects including invasive plant management, revegetation and rare plant monitoring/mapping.
On the job training:
• Identifying native and invasive plants at all life stages. Mapping with mobile GIS applications.
• Determining prioritization and effective techniques for weed management based on phenology, scale of infestation.
• Operating and maintaining equipment including string trimmers, hedge trimmers, chainsaws, motorized spray rigs, hydroseeder, winches, chippers.
• Implementing habitat enhancement for endangered plants and animals.
• Biological monitoring to support tree removal projects, prescribed fire, infrastructure repair, mowing and mastication.
• Seed collection for restoration projects.
Qualifications
Minimum Qualifications:
- Demonstrated interest in ecology, conservation, habitat restoration, or a related field.
- Ability to work well independently and in a team setting.
- Ability to follow project-specific field protocols and data entry/editing procedures.
- Ability to communicate clearly and effectively in English.
Helpful Skills:
• Valid CA driver’s license, reliable transportation.
• Experience working outdoors in inclement weather.
• Familiarity with Bay Area flora.
• Experience operating/maintaining power tools.
Physical Requirements
Candidates must be willing and able to:
• Spend long hours in potentially adverse field conditions (heat, rain, slopes).
• Walk 7 hours/day in fully exposed sun while carrying equipment.
• Comfortably lift and carry at least 30 pounds.
• Apply herbicide. Training and PPE provided.
• Work in poison oak, around ticks. Training, Tyvek and Tecnu provided.
Deadline to apply: October 1st, 2025
Pay rate: $28.85 per hour. Not eligible for health insurance.
Eligibility: Completion of at least two years of college from an accredited college or university. Must submit transcripts to apply.
Schedule: Part time to full time (40 hrs/week), Monday – Friday, 7 am – 3:30 pm
The position start date is TBD depending on the selected applicant’s availability. Position can continue for up to 2 years.
