What Is Green River Preserve?
Green River Preserve (GRP) is a nonprofit, non-competitive, co-ed summer camp located on a 3,400-acre nature preserve in the Blue Ridge Mountains of Western North Carolina.
Our mission is to inspire environmental stewards through a joyful connection to nature. At GRP, the outdoors is our classroom. Through hands-on learning, outdoor exploration, creative activities, and shared adventures, we help young people build confidence, discover new interests, develop meaningful relationships, and deepen their appreciation for the natural world.
We are looking for enthusiastic, thoughtful, and adventurous individuals who enjoy working with young people and caring for the natural world. Whether your interests lie in youth development, environmental education, or outdoor adventure, a summer at Green River Preserve offers the opportunity to learn valuable skills, build community, and inspire the next generation!
Adventure Trip Leader (Expedition Leader)
The Expedition Experience: Outdoor Leadership, Technical Skills, and Risk Management
Apply Here: https://greenriver.campintouch.com/ui/forms/application/staff/App
Adventure Trip Leaders guide teenagers on challenging, multi-day outdoor expeditions that build confidence, resilience, teamwork, and leadership. Working in small teams, leaders plan and facilitate trips that may include backpacking, mountain biking, rock climbing, whitewater canoeing, and other outdoor adventures.
Trip Leaders balance outdoor instruction and youth mentorship with the practical demands of expedition planning and risk management. They coordinate routes, equipment, meals, transportation, and emergency procedures while adapting to changing weather, terrain, and group needs. Throughout each trip, they teach backcountry skills, model responsible outdoor practices, and help participants become more independent and collaborative.
This position is best suited to individuals with prior outdoor trip-leading experience, strong judgment, and a passion for working with teenagers in wilderness settings. Experience in one or more technical outdoor disciplines is valuable, along with the ability to communicate clearly, solve problems, and make sound decisions under pressure.
Key Responsibilities
- Lead and supervise teenagers on multi-day outdoor expeditions.
- Teach outdoor living skills and activity-specific techniques.
- Plan and coordinate trip logistics, meals, equipment, routes, and transportation.
- Manage group dynamics and foster a positive, collaborative team environment.
- Assess risks, implement safety procedures, and respond to medical or other emergencies.
- Model responsible outdoor ethics, environmental stewardship, and leadership.
- Encourage personal growth, independence, and teamwork through challenging experiences.
Certification Requirement: Adventure Trip Leaders must hold Wilderness First Aid (WFA) or Wilderness First Responder (WFR) certification before their start date. Green River Preserve offers WFA training before the summer season.
