Advocacy Assistant (Anticoagulant Rodenticides)

Job Title:                         Advocacy Assistant (Anticoagulant Rodenticides)

Employee Summary:      Temporary, flexible schedule (8-20 hours/week), non-exempt

Compensation:               $25 per hour

Reports to:                      Conservation Director

Who You Are

We’re looking for a passionate individual with a desire to support both people and birds through nonprofit work. The ideal candidate is a personable, persuasive communicator who is equally comfortable chatting with a stranger at a park as they are keeping careful records back at the office; who meets people where they are, shares conservation messages with warmth rather than judgment, and inspires others to become advocates for birds.

Who We Are

Founded in 1916, Birds Connect Seattle is one of the oldest environmental nonprofit organizations in the region. We envision cities that integrate and value nature, minimize threats to birds, and protect habitat. Diverse perspectives strengthen our understanding of birds, our community, and the environment, and we believe that equity and inclusion are necessary to achieve our mission.

Duties and Responsibilities

The Advocacy Assistant will build and mobilize community support for our advocacy campaign to restrict the use of harmful, blood-thinning rodenticides that threaten birds of prey and other wildlife. The responsibilities of the Advocacy Assistant include, but are not limited to:

Community Engagement

  • Coordinate with program staff and supervisor to plan advocacy outreach schedule and locations
  • Attend Birds Connect Seattle outings and events to share information about the campaign and invite participants to take action and stay informed
  • Attend other relevant community events, outings, and tabling opportunities to reach new supporters
  • Set up and staff a campaign information table at events, and answer questions in a friendly, approachable way
  • Collect contact information from interested supporters for follow-up

Advocacy Processing and Tracking

  • Look up supporters’ elected officials and process advocacy materials, including addressing, stamping, and mailing completed advocacy messages
  • Maintain a record of all actions taken in response to calls to action (advocacy postcards mailed, sign-ups, event attendance)
  • Summarize results regularly for other staff and supervisor

Required Qualifications and Skills

  • Comfort and ease with public speaking and sharing conservation messages in a friendly, inviting, non-judgmental way
  • Ability to work independently and manage your own schedule
  • Ability to travel locally to attend events and outings, with reliable transportation
  • Ability to carry outreach materials (up to ten or fifteen pounds) to and between events
  • Strong organizational skills and attention to detail, especially when tracking data and addresses
  • Reliable follow-through on mailings, records, and deadlines
  • Availability for some evening and weekend events

Preferred Qualifications

  • Passion for nonprofit work, community service, and environmental or bird conservation
  • Prior knowledge of local bird species and rodenticide impacts a plus but not required
  • Experience with outreach, tabling, or volunteer engagement
  • Familiarity with Birds Connect Seattle or the local birding community
  • Comfort with spreadsheets or simple databases
